As WrestleMania 42 approaches, signaling one of the professional wrestling industry’s most significant annual events, WWE superstar Rhea Ripley has articulated a nuanced perspective on the requisites for sustained success within the company, emphasizing a fundamental shift from individualistic ambition to a collaborative, team-oriented approach. This philosophy underpins her preparations for a highly anticipated championship clash against Jade Cargill, scheduled for Sunday’s marquee event.
Ripley, a formidable presence in WWE, contends that the era of solitary advancement in professional wrestling has largely concluded. Historically, the industry often rewarded a fiercely protective and self-serving mentality among competitors. While acknowledging the historical context of such an approach, Ripley asserts its impracticality in the contemporary landscape of WWE. "I feel we’ve gotten to a point within this industry where it is about working together," Ripley stated in an interview with CBS Sports. She further elaborated on the historical dynamic: "Back in the day, I see why there were so many arguments, people not getting along and fights. Everyone was pretty much out there trying to succeed by themselves."
For Ripley, the prevailing ethos must now be one of mutual support. "In this business, you can’t really be super selfish. It’s a team effort. You have to go out there and work as a team." This mindset, she argues, has been integral to her ascent to the upper echelons of the company.
Ripley’s stature within WWE is undeniable. She stands among the company’s most prominent and popular athletes, evidenced by her substantial social media footprint, which includes the largest Instagram following among full-time female wrestlers and a TikTok following surpassing all active wrestlers save Logan Paul. A three-time world champion, Ripley also shares the distinction of holding one of the longest single women’s title reigns in WWE history. Despite this impressive resume, which could typically foster an inflated ego, Ripley adheres steadfastly to the principle that collective elevation benefits all. She posits that a truly dominant performer requires equally credible adversaries to maintain their own impact and narrative integrity.

"If you make your opponent look like a piece of shit and you lose to them, you lost to a piece of shit," Ripley explained, highlighting the reciprocal nature of in-ring performance. "If you beat them, congratulations, you beat a piece of shit. Well done." This perspective underscores her commitment to enhancing the credibility of her opponents, thereby ensuring that her own victories hold greater significance and that her division remains compelling.
Ripley, known as "The Eradicator" for her aggressive in-ring style, consistently maintains a forward-looking perspective, not only for her own career but for the overall health of the women’s division. "For me, I think I’m a good representation of that," she affirmed. "I’m always there to try and help the person I’m in the ring with. I try to vouch for them whenever I can." She views her prominent position as a platform to elevate emerging talent. "I’m able to get myself into this spotlight where I’m not looked at as one of, if not the top, woman in WWE. My job is to bring everyone else up because I’ll need some competitors that I need to step in the ring with, where it looks like a real fight."
This philosophy was demonstrably applied in her recent encounter with Giulia, one of Japan’s most critically acclaimed female wrestlers, who has rapidly made an impact in WWE by securing the women’s United States title twice within her inaugural year on the main roster. Despite her championship accolades, Giulia had yet to consistently feature in main event segments or on high-profile cards like WrestleMania. Ripley recognized this as an opportunity. "She’s the champion, but she also hasn’t been given long matches on the main roster and that spotlight to show that she can really shine," Ripley observed. "I’m going to go out there, bust my ass, and make sure she looks good. Hopefully, that opens up opportunities."
The match, which took place on February 20 on SmackDown, garnered significant attention, particularly for a brutal-looking stomp delivered by Giulia to Ripley. Replays of the maneuver underscored its intensity, becoming a major talking point following the broadcast. Ripley herself acknowledged the visual impact: "It looked so brutal. Watching it back, I thought, ‘Oh! That looks good.’" Fortunately, the physical repercussions for Ripley were superficial. "I don’t know if I’m so acclimated to being hit in the face, but it wasn’t that bad," she recounted. "Yeah, it looked bad and gave me a black eye, but I have a hard face. I turned my face just in time. I wasn’t going to break my nose again." The incident served to highlight Giulia’s aggressive style and Ripley’s resilience, achieving the desired effect of showcasing both competitors effectively.
With the Giulia match now in the past, Ripley’s focus has sharpened on WrestleMania 42, where she is poised to challenge WWE Women’s Champion Jade Cargill. This championship bout is positioned as one of the cornerstone attractions of the event. The build-up to the match has included notable exchanges between the two on social media, sparking conjecture about potential real-life friction, a common narrative device in professional wrestling to heighten anticipation.
Despite any perceived differences, Ripley openly acknowledges the unique attributes Cargill brings to the squared circle. Similar to the highly anticipated contest between Oba Femi and Brock Lesnar scheduled for the same night, the Ripley vs. Cargill match possesses a distinct visual and atmospheric appeal. "You look at her, and you can tell she looks like a superstar," Ripley commented. "She fits in very well in the WWE, especially at Mania. It has a very big match feel when you put someone who looks like Jade against someone who looks like me."
The stark contrasts in their respective career trajectories further amplify the intrigue surrounding their championship encounter. Cargill, a former collegiate basketball standout, embarked on her professional wrestling career directly on national stages, with her every performance, success, and setback meticulously documented in the public eye. "To learn this craft on the road, on live television, I have to give her props," Ripley conceded. "That would be very daunting and scary."
Ripley, conversely, followed a more conventional and arduous path to the top. Her extensive resume reflects years of incremental progress and immersion in the industry from a young age. "For me, I’ve gone through this for years. I’ve been wrestling since I was 16. I’ve been through everything," she stated. Her journey commenced on the independent wrestling circuit in Australia before progressing through WWE’s developmental systems. "I started on the independent scene in Australia. I made it to WWE. I went through NXT UK, NXT, Raw and now SmackDown. I know the grueling task that comes with this business."
This divergence in experience and background shapes the narrative of their WrestleMania 42 clash. "She knows a different kind of grueling task. It’ll be very intriguing to see how WrestleMania pans out. We’re two different dogs in this fight," Ripley concluded. The match not only pits two dominant athletes against each other but also represents a collision of distinct professional journeys, underscoring Ripley’s overarching philosophy that while individual paths may vary, collective effort remains paramount for the advancement and spectacle of WWE.
