CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Persistent rainfall at Charlotte Motor Speedway has led to the cancellation of NASCAR Cup Series qualifying for the 67th running of the Coca-Cola 600, forcing officials to set the starting lineup based on practice session speeds. The inclement weather has cast a somber mood over the weekend, coinciding with the NASCAR community’s profound grief over the tragic loss of 41-year-old two-time Cup Series champion, Kyle Busch, earlier this week.
The challenging weather conditions have significantly disrupted the race weekend schedule. Practice and qualifying sessions for both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series were canceled entirely. The Truck Series race, in particular, has faced multiple postponements due to the relentless rain, highlighting the severity of the weather’s impact on on-track activities.
While drivers for the Cup Series did manage to get a brief on-track session for practice ahead of NASCAR’s longest endurance race, the opportunity for drivers to secure their starting positions through qualifying was ultimately washed away. The sole practice session, a 45-minute window, saw Ricky Stenhouse Jr. of JTG Daugherty Racing set the fastest lap amidst misty conditions, indicating the unpredictability of the track even before the qualifying cancellation. Stenhouse Jr.’s performance in practice, despite the challenging circumstances, provided a glimpse of the potential speed for some competitors.
With qualifying officially nullified, the starting order for the prestigious Coca-Cola 600 will be determined by the fastest lap recorded during the single practice session. This method, while a necessary deviation from standard procedure, ensures that all 39 registered entries will have a place on the grid for Sunday’s main event.

Championship leader Tyler Reddick, piloting the No. 45 Toyota for 23XI Racing, is slated to start from the pole position. Reddick has been a consistent front-runner throughout the season, demonstrating strong performance across various track types. He will share the front row with Ty Gibbs, the young driver of the No. 54 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. Gibbs has shown flashes of brilliance in his sophomore season, and starting on the front row of such a significant race presents a key opportunity for him to build on his momentum.
Following the front row, the starting grid features a blend of established veterans and recent race winners. Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen, making his highly anticipated second Cup Series start for Kaulig Racing, will roll off third. Van Gisbergen, who impressed in his debut at Circuit of the Americas earlier this year with a stunning victory, is expected to be a significant factor in the race, particularly if conditions remain challenging. Michael McDowell, the 2021 Daytona 500 champion driving for Front Row Motorsports, will start fourth, and Chase Briscoe of Stewart-Haas Racing rounds out the top five.
The second tier of the starting grid is occupied by a formidable group of drivers. Ryan Blaney, the reigning Coca-Cola 600 winner and a playoff contender for Team Penske, will begin the race in sixth position. Chris Buescher, Blaney’s teammate at RFK Racing, qualified seventh. Austin Cindric, the 2022 Daytona 500 winner, will start eighth for Team Penske. Austin Dillon, a former Coca-Cola 600 victor, is set to start ninth for Richard Childress Racing, and AJ Allmendinger of Kaulig Racing will complete the top ten.
The rain-soaked weekend has also brought a poignant focus to the absence of Kyle Busch. His No. 8 Chevrolet, prepared by Richard Childress Racing, remains a prominent fixture at the track, a stark reminder of the driver’s unexpected passing. The team has been seen unloading Busch’s cars for the Coca-Cola 600, a difficult and emotional task for all involved. In a unique circumstance for this event, Austin Hill, a successful Truck Series driver, will pilot a renumbered No. 33 car, filling in for Busch.
Among the notable entries further down the grid, Katherine Legge, who recently qualified 26th for the Indianapolis 500, is attempting to complete the challenging "Double" – racing in both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 in the same day. Legge will start the Coca-Cola 600 from the 37th position, a testament to her versatility and ambition.
The cancellation of qualifying not only alters the pre-race dynamics but also places a greater emphasis on strategy, pit road execution, and long-run speed. Teams will be forced to rely on their simulation data and the limited practice laps to fine-tune their race setups. The extended 600-mile distance of the Coca-Cola 600 is known for its attrition and strategic challenges, and the absence of qualifying may amplify these factors.
The full starting lineup for the 67th running of the Coca-Cola 600 is as follows:
- Tyler Reddick
- Ty Gibbs
- Shane van Gisbergen
- Michael McDowell
- Chase Briscoe
- Ryan Blaney
- Chris Buescher

However, the determination of the drivers and teams to compete, even under adverse circumstances, underscores the resilience and dedication inherent in NASCAR. As the sport navigates this weekend of both celebration and sorrow, the Coca-Cola 600 promises to be a compelling test of endurance, skill, and spirit.
