Suarez and Spire Motorsports Claim Rain-Shortened Coca-Cola 600 Victory, Honoring Legacy of Kyle Busch

Charlotte, NC – Daniel Suarez piloted the No. 99 Chevrolet for Spire Motorsports to a dramatic victory in the rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a triumph imbued with significant emotional resonance for the team, which operates out of the former Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) facility. The win, secured after a strategic two-tire call by crew chief Ryan Sparks, marks a poignant moment for Spire Motorsports, whose identity and operations are deeply intertwined with the late NASCAR icon Kyle Busch.

The acquisition of the KBM shop by Spire in 2023 brought with it not only physical infrastructure but also a significant portion of its operational legacy. Kyle Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, had continued to pilot KBM trucks to victory lane as recently as the preceding weekend at Dover Motor Speedway, just six days before his untimely passing due to severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis. The echoes of Busch’s formidable presence were palpable throughout the weekend, culminating in this significant win for the team that now occupies his former racing grounds.

Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson, who also served as Busch’s first sports agent and for several years as his spotter, emphasized the deep connections. "Not only is Kyle in the fabric of our place going all the way back to the MMI days but certainly we’re in that shop, a lot of his former employees came along," Dickerson stated. "I hope it’s rewarding for them too. It’s been a tough couple days. It’s still kind of hard to believe it. I was for sure he was going to walk out of that (hospital). I’m still just — I can’t believe it. It means a lot."

Daniel Suarez, a key driver for Spire, spoke with profound admiration for Busch’s impact on his career. During his media availability on Saturday, Suarez detailed how Busch had been instrumental in his acclimatization to life in the United States. "He didn’t have to help me," Suarez reflected. "He didn’t have to help this Mexican kid that can barely speak English. He was already a legend of the sport and he took the time every single week to help me. That for me spoke very, very highly of not who he is as a driver, but who he is as a person. Most people didn’t know that side of him. I got to know that side of him. I just — those are the kinds of things I want to remember about him. Honestly, because of those things, he made me want to be like him, wanting to help others, want to go give a hand to those upcoming drivers that need a hand. He was a role model."

The symbolic significance of this victory was further amplified by Spire cars and trucks carrying Kyle Busch Motorsports decals throughout the race weekend. This visual tribute underscored the profound connection between the current Spire team and the KBM legacy. Suarez described the team’s victory as "no coincidence," suggesting that the circumstances of the weekend aligned in a meaningful way.

Dickerson elaborated on the enduring competitive spirit that links Busch and Spire, a connection that predates the acquisition of KBM. He recalled their shared history at Hendrick Motorsports, working together on the No. 5 car over two decades prior. "Kyle had just a maniacal desire to win and just set a high bar and just did not give a shit," Dickerson said. "You had to meet it. He just had like this crazy curiosity. I remember being here (at Charlotte) and spotting him here, and we were following (Kevin) Harvick. … I just remember him like driving around telling Alan (Gustafson) exactly where the track bar was on (Harvick’s car) and how much rake was in it, and you’re just like, you know, only going like 200 miles an hour into the corner, but man, he was just so gifted. Really, it’s that attention to detail and that never being satisfied." Dickerson added, "I know I can kind of be a dick at the racetrack sometimes and it’s just like that. Man, he strived for perfection and you just had to meet it and it just made everyone better. He was just so maniacal about it."

Crew chief Ryan Sparks, who made the critical strategic call for two tires during a late-race caution, acknowledged the weight of bringing a trophy back to the former KBM facility. "Man, when we bought that place, there was a lot of trophies in the case," Sparks commented. "It’s impressive what he did over his career. So to bring another one home, our trucks have been stacking some up, obviously a Hocevar win in Talladega. We’re starting to win a little bit. So that’s great. There’s still a lot of room. What a heavy week with what all went on, and to bring a trophy back to KBM is pretty special. I think a fitting way to kind of honor Kyle. I think he would appreciate that because that will always kind of be the original KBM building. I know him and Jeff had a strong relationship through their careers. Pretty special to bring one back to his shop."

The acquisition of KBM by Spire Motorsports was a significant move in the NASCAR landscape. KBM, founded by Kyle Busch in 2010, established itself as a dominant force in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, accumulating multiple championships and numerous race victories. Spire Motorsports, while a newer entity in the Cup Series, has been steadily building its program. This victory in the Coca-Cola 600, a crown jewel event in NASCAR, represents a major milestone for Spire, validating their strategic investments and operational growth.

The Coca-Cola 600, traditionally the longest race on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule, is renowned for its demanding nature, testing the endurance of drivers and the reliability of their machinery over 600 miles. However, Sunday’s event was significantly impacted by inclement weather, leading to a premature conclusion. The race was ultimately called after 249 laps due to persistent rain, leaving Suarez and Spire Motorsports to capitalize on their strategic advantage.

The competitive spirit fostered by Kyle Busch continues to influence the operations at Spire. Dickerson articulated this sentiment, stating, "I think that’s kind of that throughline for all of us that worked with him along the way. I don’t think that story is just original to me. I think anybody that ever worked with him on a race team or in business, because he just wants to know every detail and he wants to tell you how you’re screwing it up and doing it wrong, and he just wants to know. Yeah, I think the thing that carries on in our place and certainly some of these other teams here too is really just that high bar and you had to meet it."

Looking ahead, the question remains whether the Kyle Busch Motorsports branding will continue to be featured by Spire Motorsports. KBM continues to operate as a Midget, Micro Sprint, and Outlaw Kart team for Kyle Busch’s young son, Brexton. Regarding the future of the KBM name within the Cup Series context, Dickerson commented, "I mean, I haven’t talked about it. I think Bill (Anthony, president) and those guys have but I haven’t talked about it. I think you honor him … and maybe this sounds weird … but we were honoring him before he passed. Again, when you buy that Truck Series team, it’s like we now want to win every race. I think the legacy or paying tribute to the legacy is just winning some races, keep winning races, and we’ll figure out the rest this week."

This victory serves as a powerful tribute to Kyle Busch, whose influence continues to shape the sport and inspire those who carry his legacy forward. For Daniel Suarez and Spire Motorsports, the Coca-Cola 600 win is not merely a race victory but a deeply meaningful moment, solidifying their place in NASCAR history while honoring a legend.
