Shane van Gisbergen, the accomplished New Zealand Supercars champion, demonstrated remarkable resilience and skill at the EchoPark Automotive 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday, overcoming two significant spins to achieve a personal best oval finish in the NASCAR Cup Series, crossing the finish line in sixth place. The event, held at the tri-oval circuit where van Gisbergen previously recorded his best NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series oval showing with a third-place finish, proved to be a pivotal moment in his transition to American stock car racing.
The No. 97 Chevrolet, fielded by Spire Motorsports, began the race outside the top 20, but van Gisbergen quickly navigated through the field. By the conclusion of Stage 2, he was strategically positioned to accumulate substantial stage points, showcasing his adaptability to the drafting dynamics of the superspeedway-style track. His aggressive push towards the finish line of the second stage saw him attempting to overtake two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Larson for third place. However, the maneuver ended in controversy when Larson, in an effort to defend his position, moved down the track and made contact with van Gisbergen’s machine.
The collision sent van Gisbergen into a wild spin that sent him skidding through the infield grass, while Larson’s car suffered significant damage and crashed into the outside wall, effectively ending his race. Larson, a prominent figure in the Cup Series with multiple championships, readily accepted blame for the incident. Speaking to media outlets, including Motorsport.com, outside the infield care center, Larson stated, "Yeah, I just screwed up. I knew the No. 45 [Tyler Reddick] was inside of me at a point in the corner. I got clear of him, but didn’t quite realize that the No. 97 [van Gisbergen] had gotten inside of him, so once I was clear, I just wanted to cut distance and short-cut my way to the finish of the stage. I hung a quick left and ran right into him [van Gisbergen]. Nothing anybody else did wrong besides me. All on me, and hate it."
Despite the jarring spin, van Gisbergen managed to regain control of his Chevrolet and continue the race. However, his challenging afternoon was far from over. Later in the race, while running in contention for a top-ten position, he experienced an independent spin exiting Turn 4, necessitating another excursion into the infield grass. Miraculously, the No. 97 machine sustained minimal damage from these off-track excursions, a testament to its robust construction and van Gisbergen’s controlled reactions.

Van Gisbergen did not re-emerge as a frontrunner until the closing stages of the race. A timely pit stop during a late caution period for fresh tires proved to be a strategic masterstroke, providing him with enhanced grip for the final restarts. He restarted the race in seventh position for the final overtime period. In a chaotic three-wide battle, van Gisbergen found himself alongside his teammate Ross Chastain and provided a crucial push, propelling Chastain forward. As the white flag waved, van Gisbergen was running an impressive fourth, directly behind Chastain.
In the final corner, van Gisbergen’s momentum was disrupted as he was forced to move up, allowing Carson Hocevar and Daniel Suarez to slip past him. Despite this late shuffle, his sixth-place finish secured his career-best result on an oval track in the NASCAR Cup Series, surpassing his previous best of tenth, achieved at Kansas Speedway in the fall of the previous year.
The significant points haul from this performance is a crucial development for van Gisbergen’s championship aspirations. Following a 30th-place finish in the Daytona 500, he was ranked 28th in the driver standings. This weekend’s result catapults him to 16th in the points standings. This improved position is particularly noteworthy given NASCAR’s reconfigured championship format for 2026, which will see the top 16 drivers advance to "The Chase" after the 26th race of the season.
Van Gisbergen’s journey in NASCAR has been closely watched, with his performances often highlighting his adaptability and raw talent. His success in the Supercars Championship in Australia and New Zealand, where he is a three-time champion, has set high expectations for his transition to the highly competitive Cup Series. While his debut season has presented challenges, his recent performances, including this career-best oval finish, indicate a steady progression and a growing understanding of the intricacies of NASCAR racing.
The EchoPark Automotive 400 was won by Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing, who secured his second consecutive victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Reddick’s win, achieved in dramatic fashion with significant damage to his car, underscored the unpredictable nature of racing at the superspeedway. The race also saw notable performances from other drivers, including Carson Hocevar, who continued to impress in his rookie season.
Spire Motorsports, the team fielding van Gisbergen’s No. 97 Chevrolet, has been a consistent participant in the Cup Series, providing opportunities for drivers to showcase their abilities. Van Gisbergen’s current standing at 16th place in the championship points reflects his team’s efforts and his own driving prowess. The remaining races in the season will be critical for van Gisbergen as he aims to solidify his position within the top 16 and contend for a playoff berth. His ability to overcome setbacks, such as the two spins at Atlanta, demonstrates a mental fortitude that is essential for success in the demanding environment of the NASCAR Cup Series. The next event on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule is the Ambetter Health 400 at Phoenix Raceway on March 10th.
