Van Gisbergen Eyes Progress Despite Second-Place Finish at COTA, Climbs to Fifth in Championship Standings

Circuit of the Americas, Texas – Shane van Gisbergen, the prodigious talent from New Zealand, found himself in an unfamiliar position at the conclusion of the NASCAR Cup Series road course event at Circuit of the Americas: disappointed with a second-place finish. Despite securing a valuable runner-up result and a significant points haul, van Gisbergen expressed a subtle frustration, underscoring the elevated expectations that have rapidly become the norm for the driver in his debut NASCAR Cup Series season.

The result at COTA marks a notable exception in van Gisbergen’s otherwise dominant performance on road and street circuits during his nascent NASCAR career. In the 2025 season, he had swept every road and street course event on the NASCAR Cup schedule, a feat that established him as a formidable contender on these specific track layouts. While he had secured victory in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at COTA in 2025, the 2026 edition of the Cup Series race saw him fall just one position short of replicating that success.

Van Gisbergen’s journey through the field on Sunday was a testament to his skill and the improving performance of his No. 97 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet. After qualifying 13th, he systematically advanced through the pack, reaching as high as third place before the initial pit stop cycle. Opting to stay out until the conclusion of the first stage, van Gisbergen secured a crucial nine stage points by crossing the line in second. He further augmented his points total with an additional stage point for finishing tenth in Stage 2.

The latter half of the race saw van Gisbergen positioned just outside the primary battle for the lead, which was largely dominated by Tyler Reddick and Ryan Blaney. A strong top-five finish appeared to be within his grasp, but a timely caution flag, precipitated by his teammate Ross Chastain losing a wheel, presented a tangible opportunity for a shot at victory.

However, the charge of Tyler Reddick proved insurmountable. Reddick, driving the No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota, demonstrated exceptional pace and execution, ultimately securing his third consecutive victory at the Circuit of the Americas. Van Gisbergen managed to overtake Ryan Blaney on the restart and engaged in a determined pursuit of Reddick for several laps. Despite his best efforts, the No. 97 Chevrolet lacked the ultimate pace to reel in Reddick, and van Gisbergen eventually settled into a more distant second place, finishing approximately four seconds behind the victorious Reddick.

This second-place finish represents van Gisbergen’s first top-five result of the 2026 season and a significant indicator of his continued adaptation to the NASCAR Cup Series. Post-race, van Gisbergen articulated his nuanced feelings about the outcome. "It’s weird to be disappointed with second," he admitted. "This series is just so high level and I felt okay. We got our Chevy a lot better than yesterday, but following Tyler – his driving was immaculate, and his car was very good too. I tried. Didn’t quite have enough, but still a great points day for the #97."

When pressed on the specific areas where he felt the car could improve, van Gisbergen identified a deficit in both cornering and overall drive. "The car lacked a little bit of turn and a little bit of drive," he explained. "Tyler [Reddick] was just amazing. The way he was driving was really good and his car was good. We just didn’t quite have enough…"

The impact of Sunday’s performance on van Gisbergen’s championship aspirations cannot be overstated. Entering the COTA weekend, he was ranked 16th in the championship standings, a position bolstered by his strongest oval track result to date just one week prior. The substantial points gained from his second-place finish at Circuit of the Americas have propelled him an impressive 11 positions forward, to fifth place in the overall championship standings. He now sits just 26 points behind the second-place contender and 96 points adrift of the current points leader, Tyler Reddick. This rapid ascent highlights van Gisbergen’s potential to contend for a championship in his rookie season.

Tyler Reddick’s victory at COTA was not only a personal triumph but also a historic achievement. His consistent dominance on the road course venue has cemented his status as a specialist at the track, a remarkable feat in the highly competitive NASCAR Cup Series. The battle between Reddick and van Gisbergen, two of the sport’s most exciting talents, offered a compelling display of skill and strategy, leaving fans eager for their future encounters.

The performance of Shane van Gisbergen at COTA, despite the slight sting of not achieving victory, underscores his rapid integration into the NASCAR Cup Series. His ability to consistently contend for wins on diverse track types, coupled with his strategic points accumulation, positions him as a significant factor in the championship narrative as the 2026 season progresses. The Trackhouse Racing organization will undoubtedly be analyzing the data from this weekend to further refine the No. 97 Chevrolet, aiming to translate van Gisbergen’s undeniable talent into more wins. The journey from his native New Zealand to the pinnacle of American stock car racing continues to be one of the most compelling storylines of the season.
