Tragedy Strikes NASCAR: Michael Annett, Accomplished Driver and Daytona Winner, Passes Away at 39

NASCAR is mourning the loss of Michael Annett, a respected competitor who achieved significant success across all three of the sport’s national series. Annett, who turned 39 earlier this year, passed away unexpectedly. The circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been disclosed.

Annett’s career in NASCAR spanned from 2008 to 2021, a period during which he accumulated 321 starts in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts (formerly Xfinity) Series, now known as the Xfinity Series. His most notable achievement in this series was a victory at Daytona International Speedway in 2019, driving for JR Motorsports, a team co-owned by NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. This win came with his teammate Justin Allgaier finishing just behind him, highlighting the strength of the JR Motorsports program at the time.

Throughout his Xfinity Series tenure, Annett consistently demonstrated his skill and competitive spirit. He secured multiple top-five and top-ten finishes in the championship standings, with his highest placement being fifth in 2012 while competing for Richard Petty Motorsports. His ability to contend at the highest level of the series was evident in his six top-ten championship finishes during this period.

Beyond his Xfinity Series accomplishments, Annett also made a significant impact in the NASCAR Cup Series. He was a full-time Cup driver from 2014 to 2016, competing in 106 races. During this time, he drove for established teams such as Tommy Baldwin Racing and Harry Scott Motorsports. While his Cup Series results did not reach the same statistical highs as his Xfinity Series performance, he achieved a respectable 13th-place finish in the prestigious Daytona 500 in 2015. He never finished higher than 33rd in the Cup Series standings, but his presence in the premier series underscored his ambition and dedication to the sport.

Annett’s racing journey began even before his national series debut. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, he showcased his talent in the ARCA Menards Series, securing two victories at Talladega Superspeedway in 2007 and Daytona International Speedway in 2008. He also made a brief foray into the NASCAR Truck Series, starting nine races and earning a runner-up finish at Kentucky Speedway in 2008, narrowly missing victory by half a second to Johnny Benson Jr.

His final NASCAR national series start occurred in 2021 at Phoenix Raceway, where he finished eleventh in the season finale. Earlier that year, Annett had to miss several races due to a stress fracture in his right femur, a testament to the physical demands of professional racing.

The news of Annett’s passing has sent ripples of sadness throughout the NASCAR community. JR Motorsports, where he spent crucial years of his career from 2017 to 2021, issued a heartfelt statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Annett family with the passing of our friend Michael Annett," the team said. "Michael was a key member of JRM from 2017 until he retired in 2021 and was an important part in turning us into the four-car organization we remain today." This statement emphasizes Annett’s instrumental role in the team’s growth and development.

NASCAR itself released a somber tribute, stating: "NASCAR is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former NASCAR driver Michael Annett. Michael was a respected competitor whose determination, professionalism, and positive spirit were felt by everyone in the garage. Throughout his career, he represented our sport with integrity and the passion of a true racer. NASCAR extends its condolences to Michael’s family and many friends."

Pilot Flying J, a long-time sponsor of Annett for much of his career, also expressed their sorrow. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Annett family, the JRM Motorsports team and the entire NASCAR community," a spokesperson for Pilot Flying J stated. "It was our privilege to sponsor Michael for 14 seasons and fuel his love for racing. Pilot will be making a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his memory and extends our deepest condolences to Michael’s family, friends and fans." This commitment to supporting St. Jude’s highlights Annett’s connection to charitable causes.

Annett’s career was characterized by his unwavering dedication and a positive demeanor that endeared him to fans and competitors alike.
