ATLANTA, GA – New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen demonstrated remarkable resilience on Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, navigating two mid-race spins to achieve his most impressive oval finish to date in the NASCAR Cup Series, crossing the line in sixth place. The EchoPark Automotive 400, the site of van Gisbergen’s prior career-best oval showing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (third), proved to be a proving ground for the Supercars champion’s adaptability on a different style of track.
Van Gisbergen, driving the No. 97 Chevrolet for Spire Motorsports, improved upon his previous Cup Series oval best of tenth, achieved last fall at Kansas Speedway. His journey to this career-defining result was far from straightforward, marked by incidents that could have easily derailed his race.
Starting the event outside the top 20, van Gisbergen quickly showcased his upward mobility, making significant gains through the field. By the conclusion of Stage 2, he was in a strong position to accumulate valuable stage points, indicating a solid performance in the first half of the race. The turning point, however, came late in the stage as van Gisbergen was attempting to overtake two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Larson for third place. In a move that ultimately led to significant consequences for both drivers, Larson, in his No. 5 Chevrolet, appeared to make contact with van Gisbergen’s car as he moved down the track.
The contact sent van Gisbergen into a wild spin through the infield grass, while Larson’s car slid and impacted the outside wall, ending his day prematurely. Larson, after assessment at the infield care center, took full responsibility for the incident.

"Yeah, I just screwed up," Larson stated in a media scrum attended by Motorsport.com. "I knew the No. 45 [Tyler Reddick] was inside of me at a point in the corner. I got clear of him, but didn’t quite realize that the No. 97 [van Gisbergen] had gotten inside of him, so once I was clear, I just wanted to cut distance and short-cut my way to the finish of the stage. I hung a quick left and ran right into him [van Gisbergen]. Nothing anybody else did wrong besides me. All on me, and hate it."
Despite the significant spin and excursion off-track, van Gisbergen’s No. 97 Chevrolet sustained minimal damage, allowing him to continue the race. He managed to regain his composure and rejoin the competition. However, his progress was again hampered when, while running in contention for a top-ten position, he spun independently exiting Turn 4, resulting in another trip through the infield grass. This second off-track moment further tested the resilience of both driver and machine.
The No. 97 Chevrolet, remarkably intact despite the incidents, did not reappear at the front of the pack until the late stages of the race. A strategic decision to pit for fresh tires during a late caution period proved to be a crucial maneuver.
With the benefit of increased grip from the new tires, van Gisbergen began to carve his way through the field once more. He restarted seventh for the final overtime period, a testament to his persistence and the team’s strategy. In the chaotic environment of the restart, van Gisbergen found himself in a three-wide situation, working with teammate Ross Chastain of Trackhouse Racing. Van Gisbergen provided a crucial push to Chastain, helping to propel him forward. As the white flag waved, signaling the final lap, van Gisbergen was positioned in fourth place, directly behind Chastain.
In the final corner, a squeeze on the track saw van Gisbergen move up, inadvertently creating openings for Carson Hocevar and Daniel Suarez to pass him. Despite this late-race shuffle, the sixth-place finish secured his career-best result on an oval circuit in the Cup Series.
Beyond the personal achievement, this strong performance yielded significant championship points for van Gisbergen. Following a 30th-place finish in the Daytona 500, he had been situated 28th in the driver standings. Sunday’s result propels him to 16th in the points, a considerable jump that positions him within the playoff picture. The NASCAR Cup Series is set to implement a reconfigured championship format for 2026, where the top 16 drivers in the standings after Race 26 will qualify for "The Chase," making this points gain particularly valuable.
Van Gisbergen, a three-time Supercars champion in Australia, has been gradually adapting to the intricacies of NASCAR racing since his debut. His performances have consistently shown improvement, particularly on oval tracks, where the draft and pack racing present unique challenges compared to his previous racing experience. His ability to learn and execute on these demanding circuits, even with the setbacks encountered at Atlanta, highlights his potential for continued success in the series. The Spire Motorsports team has provided a platform for van Gisbergen to showcase his talent, and this result underscores the progress being made.
The race itself was a dramatic affair, won by Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing, who secured his second consecutive victory at Atlanta. Reddick’s triumph came despite significant damage to his car, adding to the unpredictable nature of the event. The track, known for its high speeds and close competition, once again delivered an action-packed spectacle for the fans.
Van Gisbergen’s performance at Atlanta Motor Speedway serves as a compelling narrative of overcoming adversity. The two spins, while unfortunate, did not deter his resolve. His ability to rebound and fight his way back to a career-best finish demonstrates a mental fortitude and skill set that bodes well for his future in the NASCAR Cup Series. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the No. 97 Chevrolet to see if van Gisbergen can build upon this momentum and continue to challenge for strong results.
