Rising NASCAR Star Connor Zilisch Leaves Door Ajar for Formula 1 While Embracing Full-Time Stock Car Debut

Daytona Beach, FL – Nineteen-year-old phenom Connor Zilisch, fresh off a dominant performance in the Rolex 24 at Daytona and poised for his maiden full-time NASCAR Cup Series season, has acknowledged a childhood dream of Formula 1, stating he "wouldn’t say no" to a future opportunity in the pinnacle of motorsport, provided his stock car career reaches significant heights.

Zilisch, already a proven winner across a diverse array of racing disciplines, is currently making his debut in the prestigious GTP class at the Rolex 24 at Daytona with the Whelen Cadillac squad. This endurance racing experience comes just weeks before he is set to pilot the No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet in his first full-time NASCAR Cup campaign. His impressive resume includes victories in ARCA, Mazda MX-5 Cup, the CARS Tour, Trans-Am, IMSA, and the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. His karting pedigree is equally formidable, marked by a championship win in the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy. Furthermore, Zilisch has demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for road and street courses, proving to be one of the few drivers capable of challenging the formidable Shane van Gisbergen.

The rapid ascent of Zilisch has led many to label him a "generational talent." His performance last season, which saw him secure ten wins as a rookie in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, lends significant weight to this assessment. A remarkable stretch last summer saw him win seven out of eight races he contested, narrowly missing out on a championship due to a single-race finale format that NASCAR has since revised for the upcoming season.

Speaking on Saturday from the Peacock Pitbox during the Rolex 24 broadcast, Zilisch addressed questions regarding his long-term racing ambitions. As a Red Bull athlete currently competing for Cadillac – a brand on the cusp of entering Formula 1 – the conversation inevitably turned to the possibility of a Formula 1 future. This follows the precedent set by Colton Herta, who previously stepped away from a successful IndyCar career with the ambition of securing a seat in Formula 1.

When directly asked about his Formula 1 aspirations, Zilisch responded, "That’s something I dreamed of as a kid. If I have a very successful first few years in NASCAR it’s not something I wouldn’t say no to." He elaborated on his current focus, stating, "I love F1 racing but honestly, I love what I’m doing in NASCAR as well. It’s so much fun to get to race on the biggest stage in America. I get to do the Daytona 500 in three weeks for the first time. I’m certainly excited and infused in everything I’m doing in the NASCAR world, and it’s got my attention at this time with 38 weekends."

He further articulated the conditional nature of any potential Formula 1 pursuit: "You never know, one day, if that opportunity comes about and I feel like I’ve done all I needed to do this side of the pond, I would definitely think about it."

Despite this openness to a distant F1 possibility, Zilisch was unequivocal in emphasizing that his immediate and primary focus remains firmly entrenched in stock car racing as he embarks on the significant transition to the highest echelon of American motorsport. The Daytona 500, scheduled for February, represents his immediate major career milestone.

Trackhouse Racing, the team Zilisch will represent, has been a significant force in NASCAR’s premier series. The team, co-owned by Justin Marks and Grammy Award-winning artist Pitbull, has quickly established itself as a competitive entity since its inception. Marks, a former NASCAR driver himself, has been instrumental in building a culture focused on innovation and driver development. The acquisition of Ross Chastain and the subsequent signing of Daniel Suárez have seen the team achieve multiple victories and contend for championships. Zilisch’s addition signals a continued investment in nurturing young talent with the potential for future success.

Zilisch’s early career success across various disciplines highlights a rare adaptability and innate talent. His experience in IMSA, particularly in the competitive LMP2 class where he achieved a class victory in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2022, demonstrates his prowess in sports car racing. This diverse background is often seen as a valuable asset for drivers transitioning to different forms of motorsport, providing a broad understanding of car dynamics and race strategy.

The NASCAR Cup Series season, which kicks off with the Daytona 500, comprises 38 races spread across 38 weekends, demanding a high level of physical and mental fortitude from its competitors. Zilisch’s commitment to this demanding schedule underscores his dedication to mastering stock car racing. The series features a mix of oval tracks, road courses, and street circuits, offering a comprehensive test of a driver’s abilities. His proven success on road courses, particularly his ability to challenge drivers like van Gisbergen, suggests he will be a strong contender on circuits like Circuit of the Americas and the upcoming Chicago Street Race.

The mention of Red Bull as a sponsor is also noteworthy. The energy drink giant has a significant global presence in motorsport, sponsoring drivers and teams across Formula 1, NASCAR, and various other disciplines. Their involvement with Zilisch could potentially open doors and provide resources that might influence future career paths, including the potential F1 avenue he alluded to. Red Bull’s driver development program has a storied history of identifying and nurturing talent that has gone on to achieve success at the highest levels of motorsport.

The shift in NASCAR’s championship format, moving away from a single-race finale, is also a positive development for drivers like Zilisch who aim for consistency throughout the season. This format change rewards sustained performance over the entire year, aligning better with the development of a young driver building their career.

As Zilisch prepares for his NASCAR Cup Series debut, the racing world will be watching closely. His ability to translate his diverse racing background into success on the stock car circuit will be a key storyline for the 2024 season. While his immediate future is dedicated to conquering the challenges of NASCAR, the subtle acknowledgment of a childhood Formula 1 dream adds an intriguing layer to his already compelling career trajectory, suggesting a driver with ambition that extends beyond any single motorsport discipline.
