In a start to the NASCAR Cup Series season that defies expectations, Tyler Reddick and the No. 45 23XI Racing team have embarked on what can only be described as a dream run, securing four victories in the first six races. This remarkable performance challenges the widely held belief that the introduction of the Next Gen car in 2022, with its single-source supplied spec components, would usher in an era of parity, preventing any single team from achieving the kind of dominance seen in previous eras from legends like Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, or Kyle Larson.
The early success of Reddick and crew chief Billy Scott has been nothing short of astonishing. While the sample size is limited to just six events, their four wins highlight an extraordinary level of performance. The victories have come across a diverse range of track types, beginning with a prestigious win at Daytona International Speedway, followed by a triumph at Atlanta Motor Speedway, a road course victory at Circuit of the Americas, and most recently, a hard-fought win at the unique and demanding Darlington Raceway. This versatility across different circuit designs raises the question of whether this is a series of fortunate events or a genuine indicator of championship-contending capability.
Reddick himself acknowledges the role of his personal strengths and the team’s development on specific tracks. "I mean, some of it is you look at the places we’ve won, in my opinion, where we’ve been very strong at (Atlanta); we won there," Reddick stated. "COTA has been a track over the years that I’ve been very, very strong at, so we won there. Then in Darlington, you know, this is a place that of all the tracks that we go to that I’m the best at in my opinion, even more so than Homestead or even Charlotte or some of these other places where I can get it going. Yeah, I mean, it’s just a matter of the tracks that I’m really strong at and our cars are really strong at. We’ve just this year been capitalizing on it and getting the wins."
Looking ahead, Reddick expressed optimism about the remaining schedule, citing tracks where he believes the No. 45 team can continue to perform at a high level. "I was sad to see the ROVAL go but now we have two Charlotte oval dates, so that’s awesome," Reddick commented. "We’re going back to Chicagoland, and last time I was really strong in an O’Reilly Auto Parts car. There’s a lot of tracks on the schedule that we have been really, really strong at, and you got to see that in 2024 with how we were able to put races together. If we can keep this up, who knows? I’m just going to take it one week at a time."

The victory at Darlington, in particular, showcased the team’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity. In the opening lap, Reddick experienced a significant setback when his car bottomed out, damaging the alternator and forcing him to complete the entire race without a crucial cooling mechanism. Despite this critical handicap, Reddick had to navigate through the field during the second stage.
"We kind of got to that difficult point in stage three where we either take it safe and come back down and change the battery again, but give up all our track position, or we stay and basically cut every last thing off that I had running to keep me cool," Reddick explained. He further elaborated on the intense conditions, stating, "So, the final 100 laps were brutally hot. When Billy asked me if I was willing to stay and keep everything off, I was all-in because I really, really wanted to win here. With the car as good as we had today, I was willing to take that risk, you know? I just fought through the heat, fought through those things to win the race."
This string of victories has translated into a commanding 95-point lead in the championship standings over second-place driver Ryan Blaney. This advantage is equivalent to roughly one and a half races, a significant buffer as the series heads towards the Chase for the Championship, where regular season champions receive a 25-point bonus. Reddick humorously acknowledged the magnitude of this lead, remarking, "That’s badass."
For team owners Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan, this early season dominance represents a realization of dreams that perhaps even they couldn’t have fully envisioned for their relatively young organization, 23XI Racing. Founded in 2020, the team has rapidly ascended the NASCAR ranks.
"I mean, it was a dream, but it’s hard," said Hamlin, reflecting on the team’s performance. "Even legacy teams dream of starts like this. For a start-up team (when you) think about it, it’s probably a little pie in the sky, but it all comes together. I mean, eventually you just keep putting really good people together, and you’re going to have these type of results. Again, I think this was the most impressive weekend I’ve seen from 23XI, because everyone came in here with so many unknowns, and they figured out the Rubik’s Cube before everyone else."
Hamlin identified short-track racing as the organization’s primary area for improvement. Coincidentally, the next event on the schedule is at Martinsville Speedway, a classic half-mile bullring, which will serve as a crucial test of their well-rounded capabilities. Reddick, acknowledging the challenge, expressed a mixture of determination and playful anticipation: "If I can win there, oh, my gosh, the world is going to end."
The consistent success of Reddick and the No. 45 team not only bolsters their championship aspirations but also validates the strategic vision of 23XI Racing. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on whether this unprecedented start can be sustained, potentially rewriting the narrative of parity in modern NASCAR.
