Jake Paul, the social media personality turned boxer, is set to face his most formidable opponent yet in former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua on December 19 at Miami’s Kaseya Center. The bout marks a significant departure for Paul, who has built his boxing career on facing opponents with limited boxing experience, advanced age, or significant size disadvantages. This contest, sanctioned as a professional boxing match, will adhere to standard heavyweight regulations, impacting both fighters’ professional records.
The agreement stipulates the use of 10-ounce gloves, the standard size for heavyweight contests. Paul has primarily fought with 10-ounce gloves throughout his career, with the exception of his upcoming exhibition match against Mike Tyson, which will utilize 14-ounce gloves. He was also slated to wear 12-ounce gloves in his previous fight, which was scheduled against Gervonta "Tank" Davis before it was canceled due to Davis’ domestic violence allegations.
The fight will be contested at heavyweight, removing Paul’s typical advantage of competing at a weight class above his opponents. Paul typically competes at cruiserweight, a division significantly above Davis’ usual weight of 135 pounds. Paul’s sole prior experience at heavyweight was against Tyson, who, despite his legendary status, is considerably older than Paul. To ensure a fair contest, a weight stipulation has been included, limiting Joshua’s weight to a maximum of 245 pounds for the fight.
A potential advantage for Paul lies in the fight’s duration. Joshua has consistently fought in 12-round bouts for the past decade, with the exception of his short-lived 10-round match against Francis Ngannou. The Paul fight is scheduled for eight three-minute rounds, potentially shortening the amount of time Paul needs to withstand Joshua’s power.
Paul (12-1, 6 KOs) has constructed his boxing record by taking on opponents whose fame exceeded their boxing skill, or who were significantly older or smaller than him. His victories include wins over former MMA fighters Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Anderson Silva, as well as fellow YouTube personality AnEsonGib and former NBA player Nate Robinson. His sole defeat came against Tommy Fury, a professional boxer with a similar level of experience.
Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs), though 36 and potentially past his peak, presents a significant challenge. He is a two-time unified heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist, boasting a far more decorated boxing career than any of Paul’s previous opponents. In his most recent fight, Joshua knocked out former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in two rounds. Ngannou had previously taken Tyson Fury to a split decision in his professional boxing debut, highlighting Joshua’s current form and power.
Joshua’s professional career began in 2013, a year after his Olympic triumph at the London Games. He quickly rose through the ranks, capturing the British heavyweight title in 2015 and the IBF world title in 2016 with a second-round knockout of Charles Martin. He unified the division by defeating Wladimir Klitschko in a thrilling fight in 2017, adding the WBA and IBO titles to his collection. He later added the WBO title by defeating Joseph Parker in 2018.
Joshua suffered his first professional defeat in 2019, losing his titles to Andy Ruiz Jr. in a stunning upset. He regained the titles in a rematch later that year but lost them again to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021. He was defeated by Usyk again in a 2022 rematch. Since then, Joshua has strung together a series of victories, including wins over Jermaine Franklin, Robert Helenius, Otto Wallin, and Francis Ngannou, re-establishing himself as a top contender in the heavyweight division.
The Paul vs. Joshua fight represents a major step up in competition for Paul, who has faced criticism for the quality of his opponents. While Paul’s boxing skills have improved over time, he remains relatively inexperienced compared to a seasoned professional like Joshua. The fight will be a significant test of Paul’s ability to compete against elite-level opposition.
For Joshua, the fight presents an opportunity to further rebuild his reputation and solidify his position as a top heavyweight contender. A dominant victory over Paul would generate significant publicity and potentially set up future high-profile fights against other top fighters in the division.
The fight’s location at Miami’s Kaseya Center is expected to draw a large crowd and generate significant revenue. Miami has become a popular destination for boxing events in recent years, attracting a diverse audience and offering a vibrant atmosphere.
The Paul vs. Joshua matchup has generated considerable interest and debate within the boxing community. Some view it as a legitimate boxing match, while others see it as a spectacle designed to generate revenue and attract attention. Regardless of one’s perspective, the fight promises to be an intriguing and potentially explosive event.
