The highly anticipated boxing match between Jake Paul and Gervonta "Tank" Davis has been relocated to the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, slated for November 14, following the collapse of initial plans to host the event at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena. The shift in venue comes after significant hurdles emerged in securing the necessary approvals from the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission (GAEC), prompting Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), co-founded by Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, to withdraw their permit application.
The original announcement of the bout, which was to be streamed on Netflix, generated considerable buzz, positioning it as a marquee event for Atlanta. However, the GAEC, under the leadership of Chairman Rick Thompson, voiced strong opposition to the proposed matchup, citing concerns over the significant weight disparity between the two fighters and the overall integrity of the event.
"Unfortunately, we made the decision to withdraw the event from Georgia after several interviews conducted by Commissioner Rick Thompson, who seems to have a personal agenda, publicly misrepresenting the facts and undermining what was set to be a massive event for Atlanta, featuring multiple world championship bouts and the launch of efforts to revitalize world-class boxing in Georgia," Bidarian stated to ESPN. "No tickets were ever on sale, and every step of this process was coordinated in close communication with the Commission’s Executive Director. This event would have delivered significant value to the city, the state, and the sport."
Thompson’s reservations primarily stemmed from the considerable weight difference between Paul and Davis. Paul, who typically competes at cruiserweight, outweighs Davis, the reigning WBA lightweight champion, by approximately 65 pounds. This disparity raised concerns about the safety and fairness of the contest, leading Thompson to reject the proposal for either a sanctioned professional bout or an exhibition match.
"This is the dumbest [expletive] I’ve ever heard," Thompson remarked on September 8. "It’s a money grabber, and I’m not OK with that."
The GAEC’s stance underscores the regulatory challenges that often accompany crossover boxing events, particularly those involving non-traditional boxing figures like Jake Paul. Athletic commissions are tasked with ensuring fighter safety and upholding the integrity of the sport, and significant weight differences are generally frowned upon in sanctioned bouts.
Jake Paul, a social media personality turned professional boxer, has carved out a unique niche in the boxing world. Since his professional debut in January 2020, Paul has amassed a record of 9 wins and 1 loss, with 6 victories coming by way of knockout. His early opponents primarily consisted of other YouTubers, former basketball players, and retired MMA fighters, including AnEsonGib, Nate Robinson, Ben Askren, and Tyron Woodley. His most recent victory came against Ryan Bourland in March 2024, a first-round TKO. His sole defeat was at the hands of Tommy Fury in February 2023, a split decision loss that marked the first time Paul had faced a professional boxer with a winning record.
Paul’s foray into boxing has drawn both criticism and praise. Detractors often dismiss his accomplishments due to the perceived lack of boxing credentials among his opponents, while supporters credit him with bringing new fans and attention to the sport. Paul’s fights have consistently generated significant pay-per-view numbers, demonstrating his commercial appeal and ability to draw a mainstream audience.
Gervonta Davis, on the other hand, is a highly decorated professional boxer with a stellar record of 30 wins and no losses, with 28 knockouts. Known for his explosive power and exceptional boxing skills, Davis is widely regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. He has held world titles in three different weight classes, including the WBA lightweight title, which he currently holds. Davis’s most recent victory came against Frank Martin in June 2024, a decisive eighth-round knockout.
Davis’s boxing pedigree is undeniable. He turned professional in 2013 and quickly rose through the ranks, showcasing his exceptional talent and devastating punching power. His notable victories include wins over Jose Pedraza, Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios, and Ryan Garcia. Davis’s fights are known for their high-octane action and dramatic finishes, making him a must-see attraction for boxing fans.
The decision to move the Paul-Davis fight to Miami represents a significant shift in strategy for MVP. Florida has a long history of hosting high-profile boxing events, and the state’s athletic commission is generally perceived as being more receptive to crossover bouts. The Kaseya Center, home to the Miami Heat NBA team, is a state-of-the-art venue capable of accommodating a large crowd and providing a world-class setting for the fight.
"From the outset, we were clear with GAEC on the agreement between the fighters, which is what the matchup will be," Bidarian told ESPN. "We will share details next week at our New York press conference."
The specific details of the matchup, including the weight class and any special rules, remain unclear. MVP has indicated that further information will be released at an upcoming press conference in New York. However, the weight disparity between the two fighters remains a significant point of contention and will likely be a central focus of the pre-fight negotiations.
Whether the Florida combat regulatory body has officially sanctioned the fight remains unconfirmed. Securing the necessary approvals from the Florida State Boxing Commission is crucial for the event to proceed as planned. The commission will likely conduct a thorough review of the proposed matchup, taking into account the weight difference, the fighters’ respective skill levels, and the overall safety of the contest.
The relocation of the Paul-Davis fight to Miami adds another layer of intrigue to an already compelling event. The clash between the social media sensation and the boxing superstar promises to be a captivating spectacle, drawing attention from both boxing aficionados and casual fans. The success of the event will depend on MVP’s ability to navigate the regulatory hurdles, address concerns about fighter safety, and ultimately deliver a competitive and entertaining fight. The move to Miami provides a fresh opportunity to stage this highly anticipated contest, and the boxing world will be watching closely to see how it unfolds.
