NASCAR Hits Trackhouse Racing with Suspensions After COTA Wheel Incident

NASCAR has issued suspensions to two crew members of the No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet following a critical incident during Sunday’s Cup Series race at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). The penalties stem from a runaway wheel that detached from driver Ross Chastain’s car, leading to a caution and ultimately impacting his race day.

Josh Appleby, the jackman, and Kenneth Pozega, the rear tire changer, have each been suspended for the next two Cup Series events. This means they will be absent from the upcoming races at Phoenix Raceway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This decision comes directly from NASCAR’s weekly penalty report, which detailed the sanctioning body’s disciplinary actions for the COTA weekend, encompassing all three national series.

The incident occurred during the latter stages of the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at COTA. Ross Chastain, who had started on the outside of the front row and secured a victory in the opening stage, was a strong contender for a top-ten finish. However, during a green-flag pit stop, as Chastain entered what is designated as Turn 19 on the road course layout, his car experienced a severe spin. The right-rear wheel detached from the vehicle during this uncontrolled maneuver, sending it skittering across the track and into the gravel trap.

Despite the dramatic loss of a wheel and the ensuing spin, Chastain demonstrated remarkable car control. By maintaining throttle input, he was able to avoid becoming completely mired in the gravel and nursed the damaged Chevrolet back to the pit lane. The detached wheel, however, became an immediate hazard on the racing surface, forcing NASCAR officials to throw the only natural caution of the entire race.

As per standard NASCAR procedure for such safety infractions, Chastain’s car was held for two laps on pit road. This penalty, coupled with the time lost due to the pit stop and the caution, proved insurmountable for the No. 1 team. Despite their efforts, Chastain was unable to regain the lost track position, and the remainder of the race ran under green-flag conditions, preventing any opportunity to recoup the lost laps. Chastain ultimately finished the race in 35th position.

The suspensions for Appleby and Pozega underscore NASCAR’s stringent approach to wheel security, a concern that has been amplified since the introduction of the Next Gen car in 2022. Data indicates that approximately 60 loose wheel penalties have been issued by NASCAR since the current-generation car debuted. While this marks the first instance of a loose wheel impacting the No. 1 Trackhouse Racing entry, the severity of the incident—a wheel detaching and becoming a track hazard—has triggered significant penalties.

This specific penalty was the sole infraction noted in NASCAR’s official report for the Cup Series, O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge (Xfinity Series), and Truck Series races held at COTA and St. Petersburg respectively over the weekend. The focus on driver safety and the integrity of the racing surface remains paramount for NASCAR officials, and these suspensions reflect that commitment.

Trackhouse Racing, co-owned by Justin Marks and entertainer Pitbull, has established itself as a competitive force in the NASCAR Cup Series. The team, in its third year of competition, fields two full-time entries: the No. 1 Chevrolet driven by Ross Chastain and the No. 99 Chevrolet piloted by Daniel Suárez. Chastain, in particular, has become known for his aggressive driving style, often referred to as "The Walrus," which has seen him involved in both spectacular overtakes and notable on-track incidents. His 2022 season was particularly successful, yielding two wins and a runner-up finish in the championship standings. The 2023 season saw him continue his winning ways with two victories and a strong playoff run.

The COTA event was the third road course race on the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series schedule, following races at Daytona International Speedway and Sonoma Raceway. Road course racing often presents unique challenges for teams and drivers, demanding precise handling, strategic pit stops, and heightened awareness of track conditions and other competitors. The Circuit of the Americas, a 3.41-mile road course with 20 turns, is renowned for its challenging layout, including the iconic esses section and the steep downhill braking zone into Turn 1.

The upcoming races at Phoenix Raceway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway are crucial junctures in the NASCAR Cup Series season. Phoenix Raceway, a 1-mile oval, is a frequent host of the championship finale, making performance there particularly important for teams aiming for the title. Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a 1.5-mile tri-oval, is a high-speed track that often produces thrilling racing and is a regular fixture on the Cup Series calendar. The absence of two key crew members will undoubtedly present a significant hurdle for the No. 1 Trackhouse Racing team as they navigate these critical events. The team will need to rely on temporary replacements or reassign personnel to fill the roles of jackman and tire changer.

NASCAR’s proactive stance on safety, particularly concerning wheel retention, is a response to a history of incidents that have put drivers, crew members, and fans at risk. The evolution of the Next Gen car, while intended to improve competition and reduce costs, has presented new engineering and operational challenges.
