Las Vegas, NV – The enduring legacy of the 1990 motorsport film "Days of Thunder" continues to captivate Hollywood and the NASCAR community, with recent developments indicating a serious push towards a sequel. Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, the sport’s winningest active driver, has confirmed he has been in communication with a film writer tasked with developing the script for a potential follow-up to the iconic Tom Cruise-led movie. This engagement underscores the growing momentum behind the project, which has seen producer Jerry Bruckheimer and star Tom Cruise publicly express their interest in revisiting the world of high-octane stock car racing on the silver screen.
"Days of Thunder," released over three decades ago, became a cultural touchstone for racing enthusiasts, paralleling the narrative arc of "Top Gun" with the thrilling backdrop of NASCAR. The film, which grossed more than double its production budget, has maintained a strong following among fans, solidifying its place in motorsport cinema history. The recent success of the Formula 1-centric film "Apex" has further fueled discussions surrounding the viability of other racing-themed productions.
Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern reported that a Hollywood writer has been actively immersing themselves in the NASCAR environment, engaging with teams and drivers, and visiting race shops to gather authentic details for the script. This investigative approach aims to ensure the sequel resonates with the sport’s current landscape while capturing the dramatic essence that made the original film a hit.
Kyle Busch, whose own nickname "Rowdy" is a direct homage to Michael Rooker’s character Rowdy Burns in the original "Days of Thunder," is one of the prominent figures from the current NASCAR roster who has lent his perspective to the project. Speaking at a press conference at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway ahead of the Cup Series race, Busch shared his enthusiasm and cautious optimism regarding the potential sequel.

"I don’t know how much NASCAR’s involvement is, if they’re the ones calling for it or not, but obviously I think it would be something cool. It would be special," Busch stated. He acknowledged the significant challenge of creating a sequel that lives up to the standard set by its predecessor. "You’ve got to be careful with it, right? Because the first one was so good, you don’t want to screw up the second one. It’s always hard to come back with a better second chance at making a movie."
Despite the inherent difficulties, Busch expressed his positive engagement with the creative process. "But no, it’s awesome. I’ve had a chance to speak with the writer a couple times about some of the ideas and what not, so that’s been pretty fun and interesting to see what the concept may be or may not be. But yeah, we’re certainly looking forward to it and seeing it come to fruition."
The prospect of a "Days of Thunder" sequel has also prompted comparisons to other motorsport-related films, notably the 2006 comedy "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby." Christopher Bell, who secured pole position for the Cup race in Las Vegas, weighed in on the potential impact of a new "Days of Thunder" film, suggesting it could offer a more beneficial representation of the sport to a broader audience than the comedic approach of "Talladega Nights."
"Yeah, it would be really cool," Bell commented when asked about a potential sequel. "I think anytime you get more exposure for our sport and just getting more eyes on it would be huge." Bell articulated his appreciation for the more serious tone of the original "Days of Thunder." "One thing I appreciate about ‘Days of Thunder’ was it was taken a little bit more serious. As a kid growing up, I loved ‘Talladega Nights,’ and I thought it was hilarious, but then the older I got, and the more into the sport I got, I realized that the general public kind of took that as reality and not the comedy than it was."
Bell’s perspective highlights a common sentiment within the sport regarding the perception shaped by "Talladega Nights." While widely enjoyed for its humor, the film’s satirical portrayal, at times, blurred the lines between fiction and reality for some viewers unfamiliar with the intricacies of NASCAR.
"I think if you could get more serious footage of it and showing how amazing our sport is, is a great, great thing," Bell concluded, underscoring the potential for a "Days of Thunder" sequel to authentically showcase the skill, dedication, and drama inherent in professional stock car racing.
The involvement of prominent figures like Kyle Busch and Christopher Bell, coupled with the continued interest from Hollywood heavyweights, suggests that the wheels are indeed in motion for a potential return to the "Days of Thunder" universe. The success of such a venture would likely depend on its ability to balance authentic racing drama with compelling storytelling, a challenge that the creative team, with input from seasoned NASCAR professionals, appears poised to undertake. The broader NASCAR community will undoubtedly be watching with keen interest as this cinematic revival progresses.
