Nurmagomedov and Makhachev have collectively established themselves as formidable forces within the sport, boasting an impressive combined professional record of 57 wins against only 1 loss. Their dominance includes seven lightweight title defenses, a testament to their grappling-heavy, Dagestani style. Nurmagomedov, who retired from active competition in 2020, recently demonstrated his continued involvement in the sport by cornering Makhachev during his successful UFC 322 welterweight championship triumph over Jack Della Maddalena.
Throughout Nurmagomedov’s tenure at the summit of the lightweight division, he and Ferguson were scheduled to face each other on multiple occasions. However, a series of unforeseen circumstances, including injuries and event cancellations, consistently derailed these highly anticipated matchups. This repeated failure to materialize left a significant void for fans who eagerly awaited what was widely considered one of the most compelling stylistic clashes in UFC history. Nurmagomedov’s eventual retirement in 2020 formally closed the chapter on this potential superfight.
Despite the passage of time and his current age of 41, Ferguson maintains unwavering confidence in his ability to have deciphered Nurmagomedov’s undefeated puzzle. Furthermore, he believes he would present a formidable challenge to Makhachev.
"To me, in my opinion, Islam was one of the dudes that always had Khabib in the practice room," Ferguson stated during an interview with Helen Yee Sports. He drew a parallel to the dynamic between former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili, suggesting that Makhachev’s full potential may have been overshadowed while Nurmagomedov was actively competing. "At the time, it was kind of like [Aljamain Sterling] and Merab [Dvalishvili], just feeling like when ‘Aljo’ left then Merab finally started to shine and stuff. It’s the same thing with Khabib and Islam. I always thought Islam was more of a conditioned athlete and doing his thing, but best of luck." Ferguson concluded his assessment with a direct challenge: "But in my prime, kick your ass."

Ferguson offered considerable praise for Makhachev’s recent performance, particularly his decisive victory over Della Maddalena. He posited a theory that Makhachev might have possessed superior fighting capabilities compared to Nurmagomedov throughout their shared training history. Ferguson theorizes that Makhachev’s path to independent greatness only fully cleared following the passing of Nurmagomedov’s father and revered fighting mentor, Abdulmanap, in 2020, which was subsequently followed by Nurmagomedov’s retirement later that year.
"I think when Khabib’s dad was there, I think [Makhachev] was in the shadows not wanting to pass him just because out of respect when it goes to your teacher and your coaches and certain things like that," Ferguson elaborated. "I think when everything was all said and done and Khabib retired and the family things and so on and so forth that he finally had his time to shine."
Ferguson emphasized Makhachev’s individuality as an athlete, suggesting he operates independently rather than solely in Nurmagomedov’s shadow. "I think he’s his own athlete. I don’t think he really concerned himself about Khabib other than what he’s doing. I think at the end of the day, we’re all athletes when it comes down to it. We’re trying to pass it and pay it forward to the next generation of athletes." Ferguson also injected a characteristic boast about his own training methods, claiming, "But I tell you what, one or two years at Tony Ferguson’s camp and the academy and you’ll be better than Dagestan wrestlers any day."
Currently, Ferguson holds the Misfits Boxing interim middleweight championship, having transitioned from mixed martial arts competition to boxing. He is scheduled to defend his title against Warren Spencer on December 20 in Dubai. While the future of "El Cucuy" in MMA remains uncertain, he expressed interest in returning to the Octagon for a potential UFC White House card, specifically naming Nurmagomedov or Conor McGregor as desired opponents.
"I’m going to be real, there’s only two people that I want to go and fight regardless of where it’s going to be at, and the interesting fights would be either Conor or Khabiber," Ferguson stated, acknowledging the commercial appeal of such matchups. "I think regardless of what happens, it’s going to sell tickets, good or bad, literally that’s what it’s for. The hype." He concluded with a direct appeal for a sixth attempt at the Nurmagomedov fight: "But you put me up there with Khabiber at the White House and I guarantee you guys are going to have fireworks. You have Khabib-Tony Round 6, make it happen."
