DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Kyle Busch, piloting the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, blazed to the top of the speed charts Wednesday evening, securing pole position for the prestigious Daytona 500. This pivotal achievement not only places Busch at the front of NASCAR’s "Great American Race" but also designates him as the pole-sitter for his respective Duel qualifying race, setting the initial grid for this weekend’s preliminary events.
Busch’s blistering lap time bested a competitive field, signaling strong intent from the veteran driver and his RCR team as they vie for NASCAR’s ultimate prize. Sharing the front row of the Daytona 500 starting grid will be Chase Briscoe in the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. This pairing of Busch and Briscoe dictates the front-row occupants for the two Duel races, which serve as crucial tune-ups and final qualification opportunities for the 66th running of the Daytona 500.
Duel #1 will see Kyle Busch lead the field to the green flag, with Ryan Preece in the No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford alongside him on the front row. Meanwhile, Duel #2 will be anchored by Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Chase Briscoe and Denny Hamlin in the No. 11 Toyota, forming a formidable front-row pairing for their preliminary race.
The 45-car field will be divided equally between the two Duel races, with each event offering a significant reward beyond just starting position. The top ten finishers in each Duel race will earn points, mirroring the stage-racing format common in regular NASCAR Cup Series events. These points, while not directly impacting the Daytona 500 starting order for those already locked in, provide an early opportunity for drivers to accumulate championship points and gain a psychological advantage.

Beyond setting the grid for the Daytona 500, the Duel races also play a critical role in determining the remaining spots in the 40-car field. Four open spots are reserved for drivers who do not secure a place through owner points or past championship performance. Two of these coveted positions were effectively claimed by Corey Heim and Justin Allgaier based on their qualifying speeds. Heim, driving the No. 43 Legacy Motor Club Chevrolet, and Allgaier, in the No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, demonstrated sufficient pace to lock themselves into the 500.
However, two more open spots remain, and these will be fiercely contested during the Duel races. The highest-finishing open driver (who has not yet qualified) in each Duel race will earn one of these final berths in the Daytona 500.
In Duel #1, the battle for one of these precious open spots will be particularly intense, featuring drivers like Corey LaJoie in the No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, Casey Mears in the No. 13 Germain Racing Chevrolet, and Chandler Smith in the No. 13 Front Row Motorsports Ford. Mears, a veteran of NASCAR racing, brings a wealth of experience to the track, while LaJoie and Smith are looking to cement their place in the sport’s marquee event.
Duel #2 will also showcase a compelling fight for an open spot, with Anthony Alfredo in the No. 62 Beard Motorsports Chevrolet, B.J. McLeod in the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Ford, and J.J. Yeley in the No. 44 Nyck de Vries Chevrolet vying for the opportunity. McLeod, a team owner and driver, will be aiming to leverage his familiarity with Daytona International Speedway, while Alfredo and Yeley will be seeking to capitalize on any opportunities that arise.
