Karrion Kross Discloses WWE Contract Termination, Alleges Offer Rescinded After 24-Hour Deadline

Karrion Kross, speaking out of character as Kevin Robert Kesar, confirmed Wednesday that his contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) officially lapsed last week. The professional wrestler, a former NXT Champion, stated on "The Ariel Helwani Show" that he sought to clarify misconceptions surrounding his status following his recent departure from the global sports entertainment company, a situation that has drawn attention given WWE’s current creative landscape.

The distinction between storyline and reality has become increasingly blurred within WWE’s programming, challenging audiences and industry insiders alike to discern factual developments from scripted narratives. Recent examples include the highly publicized knee injury of Seth Rollins, which was later revealed to be part of a storyline, and the initial reports surrounding Ron Killings’ (R-Truth) release, which were subsequently reversed despite allusions from WWE Chief Content Officer Paul Levesque, known as Triple H. Kross’s disclosure aims to provide a factual account of his contractual situation amidst this evolving dynamic.

According to Kross, WWE presented him with a contract renewal offer last Tuesday. Notably, his wife and on-screen manager, Scarlett Bordeaux (real name Elizabeth Kesar), did not receive a corresponding renewal offer. Kross explained that his response to the offer was a request for transparency regarding its valuation. "I wanted to know how they came to the valuation of that offer," Kross stated. "I just wanted, you know, some information, some metrics, some analytics that support, ‘Hey, this is how we got here.’"

Kross noted that upon his inquiry for additional data to facilitate an informed decision, WWE imposed an unusually stringent deadline. He described the urgency as atypical compared to his previous experiences or industry norms. "When I inquired about that, they were unwilling to provide that information and told me I had 24 hours to agree to the offer or they would rescind it," Kross recounted.

The subsequent day, Kross engaged in further discussions with the company. "The next day, we talk. I ask if they have the information. They don’t," he explained. Unable to proceed without the requested metrics, Kross communicated his position: "And I said, ‘I can’t make an informed decision without the information and I’d like to keep the dialogue open.’ And they rescinded the offer. And that’s…that’s actually where we’re at."

Despite the rescinded offer, Kross affirmed that he remains open to negotiations with WWE. While expressing a degree of disappointment, he refrained from any outright criticism of the company, indicating a continued desire for a resolution. "The goal has always been to be with WWE. My wife and I still want to be with WWE," Kross emphasized. "I’m at the table for conversations. I did not step out of the conversation. We still want to be there. We still want to work it out."

Kross further elaborated on his motivation for publicly addressing his contractual status, citing business implications within the professional wrestling industry. He claimed that the increasing ambiguity perpetuated by WWE regarding talent contracts and releases has led to caution among other promotions. Kross stated that he has received feedback through mutual contacts indicating that other companies are hesitant to approach him for bookings, fearing potential accusations of contract tampering. "This isn’t to disparage WWE, but because there are so many convoluted stories out there going on, and actually to even some degree affect our livelihood of what we’re supposed to be doing afterwards," Kross said. "People don’t want to reach out because they’re not sure if they’re tampering and stuff like that."

A significant distinction in Kross’s situation is that his contract expired, rather than him being formally released from an active contract. This means he is immediately free to engage with other wrestling promotions and media outlets without the traditional non-compete clause, which typically imposes a 90-day waiting period on talent released by WWE. This immediate freedom provides Kross and Bordeaux with unique flexibility in exploring their next career steps.

This marks the second instance of Karrion Kross and Scarlett Bordeaux departing from WWE. Their initial tenure began in 2020 when Kross debuted in NXT, quickly establishing himself as a dominant force. Accompanied by Bordeaux, he ascended rapidly, capturing the NXT Championship within months of his debut. His character, presentation, and in-ring style resonated strongly with the NXT audience, leading to a highly successful run in the brand.

However, Kross’s first main roster call-up in 2021 was met with widespread criticism. His character underwent significant changes, including the removal of Scarlett from his on-screen presentation and a modified ring attire that diverged sharply from his established NXT persona. This creative shift was widely perceived as detrimental to his momentum, culminating in his and Bordeaux’s release in November 2021, less than a year after his main roster debut, as part of broader company budget cuts.

Their return to WWE in August 2022 was met with considerable anticipation, largely coinciding with Paul Levesque (Triple H) assuming creative control of the company. Levesque, who had overseen Kross’s successful run in NXT, was expected to restore the character’s previous intensity and presentation. Upon their return, Kross and Bordeaux were immediately positioned in a prominent feud with Drew McIntyre, signaling a renewed focus on their established personas.

During their most recent three-year run, Kross was frequently featured in the midcard, engaging in various feuds and appearing regularly on WWE programming. Despite not reaching the same championship heights as his initial NXT stint, Kross maintained a consistent presence. His character, often depicted as a dark and calculating antagonist, continued to garner fan engagement. Notably, a groundswell of support began to materialize around major events such as WrestleMania, fueled by "quasi-real segments" and behind-the-scenes narratives shared off WWE television. This fan advocacy translated into a brief appearance for Kross at WrestleMania and increased visibility on premium live events, alongside a period where his merchandise reportedly sold out, indicating a significant level of audience connection and commercial viability.

The emphasis Kross placed on "metrics" and "analytics" in his contract negotiations highlights a growing trend in professional wrestling, where talent increasingly seeks data-driven valuations similar to other professional sports. This approach reflects a desire for greater transparency and fair market value in an industry historically characterized by more opaque contractual practices. The alleged refusal by WWE to provide such information, coupled with the abrupt 24-hour ultimatum, suggests a firm stance from the promotion regarding its negotiation protocols.

The immediate future for Karrion Kross and Scarlett Bordeaux now involves navigating the open market. With Kross’s contract officially expired, they are free to entertain offers from other major wrestling promotions globally, including All Elite Wrestling (AEW), New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), and Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling, as well as the independent circuit. This situation provides them with significant leverage, contrasting with the constraints typically faced by talent released under a non-compete clause.

Despite the recent developments, Kross’s public statements convey a persistent inclination to reconcile with WWE. His assertion that he "still want[s] to work it out" leaves the door open for future discussions, should the company choose to re-engage under terms that address his stated need for transparent valuation. The wrestling community will closely monitor how this unique contractual dispute unfolds and its potential ramifications for talent negotiations within WWE and the broader industry.
