Ten years after their historic first encounter, the boxing world is abuzz with speculation about a potential rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Pacquiao, speaking at a press conference in the Philippines on Wednesday, confirmed that negotiations are underway for a possible second bout against his long-time rival. While the specific timeline remains uncertain, Pacquiao hinted that the fight could materialize as early as 2026.
"Right now we have a lot of negotiations about my next fight; there’s a possible rematch with Floyd Mayweather," Pacquiao stated, adding that discussions are ongoing with multiple potential opponents. "There’s a lot of ongoing negotiations right now, so it’s hard to plan what fight I’m going to post. I’m waiting for the final negotiation."
The original Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, held in May 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, was one of the most highly anticipated and financially lucrative events in boxing history. Mayweather emerged victorious by unanimous decision, claiming the WBC, WBA, WBO, and Ring Magazine world welterweight titles. The fight generated a record-breaking $410 million in pay-per-view revenue and a live gate of over $72 million.
Despite the widespread demand for a rematch in the years following their first encounter, the two boxing legends never crossed paths in the ring again. Both fighters have since experienced different trajectories in their careers.
Pacquiao, who revealed that he fought the first Mayweather fight with a significant shoulder injury, continued to compete actively for several years after the loss. From 2015 to 2021, he participated in seven more fights, compiling a record of 5 wins and 2 losses. Notable victories during this period include wins over Timothy Bradley Jr., Jessie Vargas, and Keith Thurman. His defeats came against Jeff Horn in a controversial decision and against Yordenis Ugás in his final professional fight in August 2021.
Following his retirement, Pacquiao briefly ventured into politics, serving as a senator in the Philippines. However, the lure of the ring proved too strong, and he returned to boxing in April 2024 at the age of 46. In his comeback fight, he faced WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios. The fight ended in a majority draw, with many observers believing that Pacquiao had done enough to win.
Mayweather, meanwhile, only fought twice more as a professional after defeating Pacquiao. He secured a victory over Andre Berto in September 2015, retaining his welterweight titles. His final professional fight came in August 2017 against UFC star Conor McGregor, which he won by TKO in the tenth round. This victory extended Mayweather’s undefeated record to 50-0, cementing his status as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
Since retiring from professional boxing, Mayweather, now 48, has participated in several exhibition bouts. These exhibitions have included matchups against kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa, YouTuber Logan Paul, and former sparring partner Don Moore. While these events have generated significant interest and revenue, they lack the competitive intensity of a sanctioned professional fight.
The prospect of a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch raises questions about the relevance and appeal of two fighters nearing their 50s competing at the highest level. Both boxers are undoubtedly past their prime, and their physical capabilities have inevitably declined with age.
The first fight in 2015 was criticized by some for taking place several years after both fighters’ peak years. Many observers believed that the fight should have happened in the late 2000s or early 2010s when both Mayweather and Pacquiao were at the height of their powers.
Despite the concerns about age and performance, the potential rematch would undoubtedly attract a massive audience. The names Mayweather and Pacquiao still resonate strongly with boxing fans around the world, and the historical significance of their rivalry would generate considerable hype.
However, the dynamics of a second fight would likely be very different from the first. Mayweather’s defensive skills and counter-punching ability would still be a formidable challenge for Pacquiao, but his speed and agility may have diminished. Pacquiao’s relentless attacking style and punching power could pose a threat to Mayweather, but his stamina and durability may have declined.
The negotiations for a potential rematch are likely to be complex and protracted. Issues such as the weight class, purse split, and location would need to be resolved. Both fighters would also need to be medically cleared to compete.
If the fight does materialize, it would be a fascinating spectacle, regardless of the outcome. It would provide an opportunity for both Mayweather and Pacquiao to add another chapter to their legendary careers and potentially settle the score once and for all.
The boxing world awaits with bated breath to see if the rematch becomes a reality. While many questions remain unanswered, one thing is certain: the prospect of Mayweather and Pacquiao stepping into the ring together again is sure to generate intense interest and excitement.
