Historic Snowfall Forces NASCAR Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium to Wednesday Amidst Lingering Weather Concerns

The highly anticipated Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium, initially slated for this past weekend, has been rescheduled for Wednesday night, marking its second postponement due to unprecedented snowfall across North Carolina. The exhibition event, a traditional curtain-raiser for the NASCAR Cup Series season, was first pushed back to Monday, but the persistent winter conditions and the ongoing need for state resources for cleanup have necessitated a further delay.

The impact of the historic snowstorm was far-reaching, blanketing much of North Carolina. While the Winston-Salem area, home to Bowman Gray Stadium, bore the brunt of the snowfall, the Charlotte metropolitan area, where all NASCAR Cup Series teams are based, was equally inundated. This widespread disruption has significantly hampered preparations and logistics for the event.

NASCAR officials have underscored that the decision to postpone, and ultimately reschedule, was driven by a commitment to ensuring a robust fan experience. According to Justin Swilling, NASCAR’s project manager for the Cook Out Clash, the atmosphere and engagement of the spectators are integral to the unique character of racing at Bowman Gray Stadium, often referred to as "The Madhouse."

"We explored all scenarios, but at the end of the day, we’re here for the fans and we want to make sure they are a critical piece," Swilling stated during a Tuesday video conference. "Anytime that anyone comes to the Madhouse for an event, it’s the fans as much as the competitors that make it a show. So, we explored all scenarios, but at the end of the day, we wanted to give ourselves plenty of time and wanted to give the community plenty of time as well to get over the most recent storms we had."

The rescheduling to Wednesday night was not solely dictated by local authorities. Swilling clarified that the decision was a collaborative effort involving NASCAR, local officials, and importantly, accommodating a broadcast window with over-the-air network FOX. This alignment of broadcast schedules was a crucial factor in solidifying the new date.

"When we all woke up this morning, we were all on the same page that it was going to take a day or two to get the industry out of the snow they have found themselves in back home in the Charlotte area," Swilling explained. "It’s also going to take a few days to get the Stadium cleared off. The city felt that responsibility as well. The state was supportive in saying, ‘you know, it’s not good to have people on the roads right now so try to stay home if you can.’ Hopefully as things warm up over the coming week, we will get to a really good place."

Despite the challenging circumstances, efforts to prepare the venue have been ongoing. Over the past 24 hours leading up to Tuesday’s announcement, approximately 40 dump truck loads of snow and ice have been removed from the Bowman Gray Stadium grounds. This intensive cleanup operation highlights the scale of the weather event and the commitment to making the track race-ready.

However, lingering concerns regarding potential re-freezing and further precipitation persist. Temperatures are forecast to drop significantly overnight on Sunday and Monday, reaching 11 degrees Fahrenheit. This raises the prospect of residual moisture melting during the day and then refreezing on roadways, posing continued travel hazards for attendees.

Adding to the uncertainty, the forecast for Wednesday, while indicating a high of 43 degrees Fahrenheit, also calls for a low of 27 degrees and the possibility of additional rain and snow. While NASCAR utilizes a wet weather tire compound and has the capability to race in damp conditions, the sanctioning body is unlikely to proceed with an active storm.

"We’re focused on what is in our control and right now, we feel best suited to get this event in on Wednesday so that is what we are focused on," Swilling emphasized. "We take things one day and one step at a time and will certainly do our best to have the facility prepared and will do our best between now and then. If we are impacted by precipitation or a rain impacted event on Wednesday… we do have the wet weather tires and this event would fall within that jurisdiction. We could run laps in the wet. We feel confident in our Wednesday plan and that’s what we are focused on. We’ll take to anything else this week as it comes."

The Cook Out Clash, typically a non-points exhibition race, serves as an important early-season event for drivers and teams to test setups, gain track time, and build momentum heading into the official NASCAR Cup Series season. The unique, high-banked quarter-mile oval of Bowman Gray Stadium often produces thrilling short-track racing, making the prospect of a fan-less event a non-starter for NASCAR. The emphasis on attendance reflects the financial and cultural importance of the fan base to this particular event and to Bowman Gray Stadium’s legacy in motorsports.

The extended delay also presents logistical challenges for teams, many of whom had made travel arrangements and begun their pre-season preparations. The ability to conduct the race on Wednesday night will be contingent on continued favorable weather conditions and the successful completion of all track and facility preparations. The NASCAR community will be closely monitoring the forecast in the coming days, hoping that the historic snowfall will abate, allowing the Cook Out Clash to finally take place and signal the official start of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season.
