CHARLOTTE, NC – Hendrick Motorsports, the most decorated organization in NASCAR Cup Series history, has officially opened the doors to its cutting-edge 35,000 square-foot athletic center, a facility designed to rival those found in elite collegiate and professional sports programs across the nation. This significant investment underscores the team’s commitment to optimizing the physical and mental conditioning of its athletes, from drivers to pit crew members, in their relentless pursuit of perfection.
The newly unveiled Atrium Health Motorsports Athletic Center represents a paradigm shift in athlete development within the racing world. Inspired by the best facilities in sports, including those at Clemson, Auburn, and Alabama universities, as well as Major League Soccer’s Charlotte FC and even the rigorous training environment at Fort Bragg, Hendrick Motorsports has curated a comprehensive ecosystem for peak performance.
The facility boasts an extensive array of state-of-the-art amenities. At its core is a high-performance weight room, uniquely featuring an integrated rock-climbing wall, designed to enhance functional strength, agility, and explosive power. Complementing this are advanced recovery devices, a dedicated nutrition station providing tailored dietary support, and specialized hydrotherapy areas including both hot and cold tubs to aid muscle recovery and reduce inflammation.
Beyond the physical, the center recognizes the critical role of mental preparedness and well-being. A dedicated film room offers sophisticated analysis capabilities, while a conference room, fittingly named in honor of NASCAR Hall of Famer Ray Evernham, provides a space for strategic discussions and team meetings. For personal comfort and convenience, the facility includes a barber shop and a sauna, alongside modern amenities like a kombucha kegerator, reflecting a holistic approach to athlete care.

Roberto Medina, development manager at Hendrick Motorsports, elaborated on the strategic imperative behind the facility’s development. "We were looking to recruit a higher caliber athlete, and we were growing as a department, so our facilities really got to a pinch point," Medina stated. "We were out of lockers. They were small lockers, and there’s a lot of equipment the guys use, so they were out of space. And then for the caliber of athlete we were trying to recruit, they’re just used to coming from top programs across the country and facilities that are at the top in the country as well. And coming to a new sport like racing, it’s just new. We had to create an appeal for it, and the facility was a big part of that."
The integration of Atrium Health as a key partner signifies a commitment to evidence-based sports medicine and performance science. The center is staffed by a full-time athletic trainer and physical therapist, ensuring that athletes receive immediate and expert care, injury prevention, and rehabilitation services. This professional oversight is crucial in a sport where the physical demands on drivers and pit crews are often underestimated, involving extreme G-forces, rapid decision-making under pressure, and explosive physical exertion during pit stops.
The aesthetic of the Atrium Health Motorsports Athletic Center is a testament to Hendrick Motorsports’ storied legacy. Branding elements, including the iconic Hendrick Motorsports logos, are strategically placed throughout the complex. Reminders of the team’s unparalleled success, such as trophies and championship imagery, are interwoven with inspiring messages on the walls, serving as constant motivators for those who utilize the space. This environment is designed to foster a winning mentality and reinforce the team’s rich history.
Hendrick Motorsports’ dominance in NASCAR is well-documented. With over 300 Cup Series victories and a record 15 championships, the organization has consistently set the benchmark for excellence. The recent championship secured by Kyle Larson in 2021 further solidified their standing. However, even after more than four decades in the sport, the team’s leadership emphasizes a continuous drive for innovation and improvement.
Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, expressed his pride and vision during the facility’s unveiling. "It’s a special day for us, and I think about where the sport has come from and where it is today, especially with pit crews and training, it’s been an amazing ride from what I’ve seen back in 1984," Hendrick remarked. "We’re so honored today to let you experience this facility, and we’re doubly excited because of Atrium and the team with Gene [Woods, President and CEO of Atrium Health] and our area here in Charlotte."
The introduction of this comprehensive athletic center is more than just an upgrade in facilities; it is a strategic investment in human capital. By providing athletes with the tools, resources, and support systems previously found in traditional elite sports, Hendrick Motorsports aims to attract and retain top-tier talent, enhance performance across all disciplines, and ultimately, continue its tradition of winning at the highest level of stock car racing. The facility’s opening marks a significant milestone, signaling a new era of athlete development and performance optimization for one of motorsports’ most legendary franchises.
