The expansive complex, a significant investment in the team’s future, rivals the training grounds of elite collegiate athletic programs and professional sports franchises across the globe.
The inspiration behind the Atrium Health Motorsports Athletic Center, as it is officially named, was drawn from a wide array of leading sports institutions. Hendrick Motorsports personnel scouted facilities at prominent universities such as Clemson, Auburn, and Alabama, alongside the Major League Soccer club Charlotte FC and even the United States Army’s Fort Bragg. This cross-disciplinary research aimed to distill best practices in athletic training, recovery, and content creation, tailoring them specifically to the unique demands of NASCAR racing.
At the heart of the facility is a comprehensive approach to athlete well-being and development. Partnering with Atrium Health, a leading healthcare provider, Hendrick Motorsports has equipped the center with an array of cutting-edge recovery technologies. These include advanced massage therapy tools, compression boots, and cryotherapy chambers, all designed to accelerate muscle repair and reduce fatigue. The facility also boasts a dedicated nutrition station, meticulously curated to fuel peak physical performance, and a barber shop, reflecting a commitment to the holistic well-being and presentation of its athletes.
Beyond the functional, the center incorporates elements designed to foster both physical prowess and mental fortitude. Roberto Medina, development manager at Hendrick Motorsports, articulated the strategic rationale behind the significant expansion. "We were looking to recruit a higher caliber athlete, and we were growing as a department, so our facilities really got to a pinch point," Medina stated. "We were out of lockers. They were small lockers and there’s a lot of equipment the guys use, so they were out of space. And then for the caliber of athlete we were trying to recruit, they’re just used to coming from top programs across the country and facilities that are at the top in the country as well and coming to a new sport like racing, it’s just new. We had to create an appeal for it and the facility was a big part of that."
Hendrick Motorsports’ status as the winningest team in NASCAR history is a testament to their consistent pursuit of innovation and performance. With over 300 Cup Series victories and a record 15 championships, including the most recent title secured by Kyle Larson in the 2021 season, the organization has a storied past. Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, expressed his pride and reflection during the unveiling. "It’s a special day for us and I think about where the sport has come from and where it is today, especially with pit crews and training, it’s been an amazing ride from what I’ve seen back in 1984," Hendrick remarked. "We’re so honored today to let you experience this facility and we’re doubly excited because of Atrium and the team with Gene (Woods) and our area here in Charlotte."
