Helmut Marko, the veteran Red Bull advisor, has identified Max Verstappen as the Formula 1 driver with whom he has shared his "most intimate" and closest relationship throughout his extensive career, expressing a continued belief in the Dutchman’s evolving capabilities. Marko’s revelation comes as he concludes a monumental 25-year tenure with Red Bull, a period during which he served as the principal architect of the energy drink giant’s highly successful young driver programme, a role he commenced in 2001.
Over a quarter-century, the 82-year-old Austrian played a pivotal role in identifying and nurturing an impressive roster of talent, ushering 18 drivers into Red Bull’s Formula 1 ecosystem. This illustrious list includes multiple world champions and Grand Prix winners such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz, and, most notably, Max Verstappen. Marko’s profound impact on the sport’s talent pipeline is undisputed, with the Red Bull Junior Team becoming a benchmark for driver development across motorsport.
Verstappen’s entry into the Red Bull fold, however, diverged slightly from the traditional junior team trajectory. Rather than progressing through the full ranks of the Red Bull Junior Team per se, Verstappen was swiftly signed by Marko and Red Bull team principal Christian Horner in 2014 with an unprecedented promise: an immediate Formula 1 drive for the 2015 season. This decision, made when Verstappen was just 17 years old and had completed only a single year in single-seater racing (Formula 3), was a bold move that underscored Red Bull’s conviction in his prodigious talent. It was a gamble that has since paid dividends beyond expectation, solidifying Verstappen’s status as one of the sport’s most dominant figures.
Reflecting on their unique bond, Marko conveyed to Austrian broadcaster ORF the depth of his connection with the three-time world champion. "The connection was certainly a very intense one, or the most intimate, I can’t say," Marko stated. "But it was the closest connection I’ve ever had with a driver." He further elaborated on the fascinating trajectory of Verstappen’s development under his observation: "And the fascinating thing was that with each passing year, Max Verstappen became faster, more mature, better. And to this day, I can’t see an end to this development, even though he is already the best driver. That was the fascinating thing." This assessment highlights a continuous evolution in Verstappen’s driving and mental fortitude, even after reaching the pinnacle of the sport.

Marko detailed a relationship largely free of significant discord, particularly as Verstappen’s success mounted. "We hardly ever had any differences of opinion," he noted. "There were a few silly things, especially in the early stages. But the more successful he became, the simpler his approach became. He has become much calmer." This maturation, according to Marko, transformed Verstappen into an exceptionally composed competitor. "He hardly ever has any lapses or outbursts, which were of course present in the early stages. And he has become an incredibly perfect or incredible personality for his age." This observation speaks to Verstappen’s growth not just as a driver, but as a complete athlete capable of managing the immense pressures of top-tier motorsport.
The expansion of Red Bull’s Formula 1 ambitions further underlines the environment in which Verstappen has thrived. The team is embarking on a significant project to produce its own power units from 2026 onwards, in collaboration with Ford. This undertaking represents a substantial escalation of Red Bull’s commitment, involving an estimated 2,000 personnel. Within this burgeoning structure, Marko believes Verstappen’s leadership qualities are paramount. "Max has become such a personality that, despite his relatively young age, he leads a team and can lead it the way he does," Marko affirmed, acknowledging Verstappen’s capacity to steer the team’s direction effectively.
Marko’s departure from Red Bull was formally discussed during a dinner with sporting CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, an occasion Verstappen was unable to attend. "Max should have been there too," Marko revealed. "There were some problems with his flight, so he wasn’t there." The subsequent conversation between the two men, however, painted a poignant picture of their shared history and the impact of Marko’s exit. "I called him the next day. It wasn’t a normal conversation. There was a certain melancholy in the air. He said he never could have imagined that he would ever achieve such success." This exchange underscores the deep personal and professional bond forged over nearly a decade of collaboration, from Verstappen’s F1 debut to his multiple championship triumphs.
In terms of historical impact, the partnership between Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing stands as one of the most successful in Formula 1 history. As of the end of the 2023 season, Verstappen has secured 54 Grand Prix victories, all achieved with Red Bull. This places the Verstappen/Red Bull pairing as the third most successful driver-team combination in the sport’s annals, surpassing many legendary partnerships. Ahead of them are Michael Schumacher, who achieved 72 wins with Ferrari, and Lewis Hamilton, who has recorded 82 triumphs with Mercedes. The sustained excellence and record-breaking achievements of Verstappen under Marko’s watchful eye have cemented both their legacies within the sport. The conclusion of Marko’s tenure marks the end of a significant era for Red Bull, but the foundations he laid, particularly through his relationship with Verstappen, are expected to continue shaping the team’s future success.
