Chase Elliott secured his 22nd career NASCAR Cup Series victory on Sunday, piloting his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to a hard-fought win in the season-opening Cook Out 400 at Martinsville Speedway. The triumph marks Hendrick Motorsports’ first checkered flag of the 2026 campaign, kicking off their season on a high note at the historic half-mile oval.
The 292-lap dominance of Denny Hamlin in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was a narrative that captivated the field for much of the 400-lap event. Hamlin, a six-time Martinsville winner, was in commanding form, leading from the outset and sweeping both Stage 1 and Stage 2. His No. 11 car appeared to have the race firmly in hand, setting a blistering pace that left competitors struggling to keep pace. However, as the laps wound down, the complexion of the race shifted dramatically.
Elliott, the 2020 Cup Series champion, employed a strategic gamble in the closing stages, pitting for fresh tires and fuel under a late-race caution. This move proved decisive, allowing him to rejoin the race with a significant tire advantage over Hamlin and the other front-runners. While Hamlin maintained a substantial lead for much of the race, his older tires began to fade in the final laps, opening the door for Elliott’s charge.
"It was a tough race, a real grind," Elliott commented post-race, reflecting on the strategic battle. "Denny was incredibly fast, and he deserved to lead as much as he did. We just needed to be in the right place at the right time with fresh tires, and thankfully, our team made a great call on strategy. This is a huge win for us to start the year, especially here at Martinsville."

Hamlin, despite leading an overwhelming 292 of the 400 laps, ultimately finished a frustrating second, half-a-second behind Elliott. His disappointment was palpable, acknowledging the missed opportunity to capitalize on his dominant performance. "We had a fantastic car all day," Hamlin stated. "We executed well, won the stages, and led for so long. It’s tough to come up short like that. We’ll learn from this and come back stronger. That’s just how it goes sometimes in racing."
Rounding out the top five were Ford’s Joey Logano of Team Penske in third, Ty Gibbs of Joe Gibbs Racing in fourth, and William Byron, also of Hendrick Motorsports, in fifth. Logano’s strong run secured the best finish for a Ford Mustang in the field, showcasing the competitiveness of the manufacturer. Gibbs, in his second full-time season, demonstrated continued improvement with his top-five result. Byron, a former Martinsville winner, rounded out a solid day for Hendrick Motorsports, securing a top-five finish.
The Martinsville Speedway, affectionately known as the "paperclip" due to its unique shape, is one of NASCAR’s oldest and most revered venues. Its tight, flat turns and demanding pit road have historically produced close, often contentious racing. This year’s opener lived up to that reputation, with multiple lead changes in the final laps and intense battles throughout the field.
The early stages of the race saw Hamlin assert his dominance. He led the opening 50 laps, taking the Stage 1 checkered flag with a comfortable margin. His momentum continued into Stage 2, where he again controlled the proceedings, securing the stage win and extending his lead.
The race’s complexion began to shift around lap 250. A caution flag for debris on track brought the field to pit road, and it was here that Elliott’s crew chief, Alan Gustafson, made the strategic call that would ultimately define the race. While many teams opted to stay out, Gustafson brought Elliott in for four fresh tires and fuel, a move that initially dropped them further down the order but paid dividends in the long run.
As the race resumed, Elliott quickly began to scythe through the field. He methodically worked his way past competitors, utilizing the grip from his fresh tires. By lap 350, he had moved into second place and was closing the gap on Hamlin.
The decisive moment came with just under 30 laps remaining. Elliott, on significantly fresher tires, made a bold move to the inside of Hamlin in Turn 2. The two drivers ran side-by-side for several laps, a classic Martinsville duel. Elliott eventually cleared Hamlin on lap 385, taking the lead and holding on through the final laps despite heavy pressure.
Other notable performances included Bubba Wallace of 23XI Racing, who finished seventh, and Noah Gragson, driving for Front Row Motorsports, who crossed the line in eighth. Kyle Busch, a two-time Martinsville winner, had a challenging day, finishing 11th after battling an ill-handling car for much of the event.
The early success for Hendrick Motorsports signals a promising start to the 2026 season. The team, a powerhouse in NASCAR for decades, has consistently been a contender for wins and championships. Elliott’s victory adds another chapter to his already illustrious career, and it positions him as an early favorite for the championship.
The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season promises to be an exciting one, with the Martinsville opener setting a high bar for the remainder of the schedule. With a blend of veteran prowess and emerging talent on display, the season is shaping up to be a competitive and unpredictable journey.
The series will next head to Bristol Motor Speedway for the Food City Dirt Race, a unique event that always provides a different set of challenges for drivers and teams. The performances at Martinsville will undoubtedly provide valuable data and momentum as teams prepare for the next installment of the championship battle.
