Eddie Hall reveals timeline for ending fight career — and why he wants Francis Ngannou to be final opponent

Hall, known as "The Beast" during his dominant strongman career, which culminated in winning the World’s Strongest Man title in 2017, has made a notable pivot into the combat sports arena. His journey began with a high-profile boxing match against rival strongman Hafþór Björnsson in 2022, a bout dubbed "The Heaviest Boxing Match in History." While Hall suffered a unanimous decision loss in that contest, the event garnered significant global attention, showcasing his willingness to engage in the combat sports sphere beyond pure strength competitions. This initial foray laid the groundwork for his more serious transition into fighting, culminating in his recent impressive MMA debut.

Currently, Hall is scheduled to participate in a Misfits Boxing event on June 13, where he will face Tommy Fury. Misfits Boxing, founded by YouTuber KSI, has carved out a unique niche in the combat sports landscape by pitting internet celebrities, influencers, and crossover athletes against each other, often drawing substantial viewership from a younger demographic. Tommy Fury, brother of WBC Heavyweight Boxing Champion Tyson Fury, possesses a professional boxing record of 10-0 (4 KOs) and gained considerable mainstream recognition for his victories over internet personalities Jake Paul and KSI. This bout against Fury represents a significant test for Hall in the boxing discipline, providing another benchmark for his progress as a pugilist.

Hall’s entry into mixed martial arts earlier this year marked a pivotal moment in his combat sports evolution. He made his MMA debut at KSW 105 in April, an event hosted by the Polish mixed martial arts promotion Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki (KSW). KSW is widely regarded as one of Europe’s premier MMA organizations, boasting a roster of formidable fighters and a strong fan base, particularly in Poland. Hall’s opponent, Mariusz Pudzianowski, was a highly experienced and respected figure in the strongman-to-MMA crossover pipeline. Pudzianowski, himself a five-time World’s Strongest Man champion, had been competing in professional MMA since 2009, amassing a record of 17-9 (1 NC) prior to facing Hall, with notable victories over fighters like Serigne Ousmane Dia and Michał Materla. Pudzianowski’s extensive experience and proven power within the cage made him a formidable first opponent for Hall.

Despite Pudzianowski’s veteran status, Hall made an immediate and impactful statement, securing a 30-second knockout victory. The swift and decisive finish, which saw Hall drop Pudzianowski with a powerful overhand right before following up with ground and pound, surprised many in the combat sports community and significantly raised Hall’s profile as a legitimate contender in the heavyweight division, particularly for his striking prowess. The quick nature of the win underscored Hall’s raw power and potential in the multi-faceted discipline of MMA.

Following this impressive debut, Hall articulated his long-term vision for his fight career in an interview with Uncrowned, a platform associated with renowned combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani. Hall expressed a clear preference for mixed martial arts over boxing as the discipline in which he wishes to conclude his competitive journey. "So, end goal, I guess, is to obviously have those big, entertaining fights," Hall stated. "I do want to go out with a bang. Obviously, I’ll do boxing, but I really love the MMA. I thoroughly enjoy the MMA. I quite fancy putting my hands up right at the end and taking a title shot — like a European title or a world title — and just, win, draw or lose, go in and give it a shot."

This aspiration for a title shot, even as a swansong, reflects Hall’s competitive drive. He elaborated on his desire to challenge for significant hardware. "Let’s just go in for a big title. And that would be my win, draw, lose, and done. See what I can do in the world of MMA and get out." Hall also acknowledged the physical toll of his athletic endeavors and the limitations imposed by age, stating, "I’m nearly 38 years of age and I’m feeling the effects of age. I’m definitely not 19 anymore." This pragmatic view of his physical condition informs his projected retirement timeline.

The conversation regarding a potential matchup with Francis Ngannou gained traction following Hall’s dominant KSW performance. Initially, Hall had expressed reservations about facing Ngannou, given the Cameroonian-French fighter’s fearsome reputation as one of the most devastating heavyweights in MMA history. Ngannou, known as "The Predator," held the UFC Heavyweight Championship and is widely recognized for his extraordinary knockout power, which has led to a series of highlight-reel finishes against elite opponents such as Stipe Miocic, Cain Velasquez, and Alistair Overeem. His transition from the UFC to professional boxing, where he notably faced Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, further solidified his status as a global combat sports superstar.

However, Hall’s perspective on a clash with Ngannou has evolved. He now views it as the ultimate challenge and the most significant fight he could possibly secure as his career approaches its final chapter. "Honestly, it’s a tough one," Hall admitted when discussing potential opponents for a grand finale. He acknowledged other formidable heavyweights, such as Phil De Fries, the reigning KSW Heavyweight Champion, who boasts an impressive professional record and extensive experience. Yet, Ngannou stands apart in Hall’s estimation. "There’s obviously people like Francis Ngannou, who are just the biggest, scariest bastards on the planet. Like a big, big fight like that."

The prospect of facing Ngannou appears to ignite Hall’s ambition, offering a chance to test himself against what he perceives as the pinnacle of fighting prowess. "It would [be a sight]. I’d train my bollocks off for it and I think that would be the last one for me — win, draw or lose. I just want to go up against the biggest, baddest person I could go up against and see if I can grab a title." The narrative of a strongman transitioning to combat sports and challenging for a world title is immensely appealing, and Hall envisions a unique legacy. "Imagine winning World’s Strongest Man and coming into the fight world and grabbing a European title, or a world title from Francis, or something. It would just be insane."

Such a hypothetical matchup would present immense logistical and competitive challenges. Ngannou is currently under contract with the Professional Fighters League (PFL), which has its own heavyweight division and a schedule for his return to MMA. A fight between Hall and Ngannou would likely require the involvement of a major promotion capable of facilitating such a high-profile crossover event, potentially KSW, or another global entity. The weight disparity would also be a factor, though both men are naturally large heavyweights.

Regarding the duration of his remaining competitive career, Hall provided a clear timeframe, aligning it with his upcoming milestone birthday. "I feel like I have two years left in me," Hall stated. "I feel like by the time I’m 40, I’m looking toward being done. There’s probably 18 months left in me." This declaration suggests a concentrated period of activity, likely comprising a handful of significant fights, before he hangs up his gloves and possibly his MMA shorts for good. The physical demands of strongman competition, followed by the rigorous training for combat sports, place immense strain on the body, making a phased exit by age 40 a prudent decision for the former strongest man.

As Hall progresses towards his bout with Tommy Fury, his long-term vision remains sharply focused on securing a major MMA title opportunity, ideally culminating in a showdown with Francis Ngannou. This ambitious plan underscores Hall’s commitment to leaving an indelible mark on the combat sports world, mirroring the legacy he established in strongman competition.
