Following his dominant performance and victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, veteran NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin has offered a grounded perspective on his future win total. While celebrating his 61st career win, which places him solely in tenth place on the all-time wins list, Hamlin shared his realistic projections for the remainder of his racing career. For many seasons, Hamlin had openly stated that achieving 60 career wins was his paramount competitive goal, even surpassing the elusive championship title. This ambition was notably fueled by a sense of controlling his own destiny through race wins, a stark contrast to the championship battle, which he felt was subject to external factors, a sentiment underscored by the controversial caution that ended his championship hopes at Phoenix in November.
Hamlin, speaking on his "Actions Detrimental" podcast on Monday, articulated his continued focus on accumulating victories. "We have next Darlington, Kansas, right? Martinsville," he mused when contemplating upcoming tracks where he might find victory lane. "I’m just thinking of the tracks. Get another win, that’s the goal. One of those two races. One of those three. Talladega, I wish, guys. I wish. I’m trying everything when it comes to superspeedway racing, just not getting the proper finishes. I’m trying to run up front as much as I can, doesn’t matter. Crash." This statement highlights his consistent pursuit of checkered flags, even on tracks where success has been elusive.
With his current contract with Joe Gibbs Racing expected to conclude at the end of the 2025 season, Hamlin provided a statistical projection for his career win total. "I thought that realistically it was… I think… I don’t know… I’m going to fall at 67," Hamlin stated. "That’s where I think it ends more than likely. And then the next year, more than likely 67. That’s just by the numbers. That’s not any, ‘Oh I feel this, I feel that.’ That’s just where the numbers land averaging what I average." This projection is based on his consistent performance of averaging three to four wins per season in recent years.
This projection places Hamlin in esteemed company, continuing to climb the all-time wins list. His current tally of 61 victories positions him ahead of NASCAR legends such as Dale Earnhardt (76 wins), Jimmie Johnson (83 wins), and Jeff Gordon (93 wins). The drivers ahead of him on the all-time list are Richard Petty (200 wins), David Pearson (105 wins), Darrell Waltrip (84 wins), Cale Yarborough (83 wins), and Bobby Allison (84 wins).
