STANLEY, North Carolina β Dennis Hamlin, the father of celebrated NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin, died Sunday evening following a devastating house fire that engulfed his Stanley, North Carolina residence. He was 75 years old. The blaze also critically injured his wife, MaryLou Hamlin, 69, who remains under active treatment in a burn center.
Emergency services, including the Lucia-Riverbend Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene Sunday evening to find approximately 45 percent of the home already consumed by flames. Both Dennis and MaryLou Hamlin were found outside the burning structure upon the arrival of first responders. Both were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital.
Gaston County EMS confirmed Dennis Hamlin’s passing on Monday night. MaryLou Hamlin, in critical condition, has been transferred to the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she is receiving specialized care. A statement from Gaston County EMS indicated that both individuals sustained "catastrophic injuries while escaping the flames."
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with officials citing significant structural damage and collapse of the home as factors hindering immediate determination. The property is registered under Won One Real Estate, an entity owned by Denny Hamlin. The 3,724-square-foot residence was constructed in 2015.
