NASCAR Cup Series veteran and reigning Daytona 500 champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is set to make his highly anticipated debut in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, the team announced Wednesday. Stenhouse Jr. will pilot the No. 45 Chevrolet Silverado for Niece Motorsports in the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway on February 16, 2024. This marks a significant moment for the 38-year-old driver, who, despite a decorated career spanning over 400 Cup Series starts and two NASCAR Xfinity Series championships, has never competed in the Truck Series.
Stenhouse Jr.’s career has been intrinsically linked to the high-octane, pack-style racing synonymous with superspeedways, a characteristic that makes his debut at Daytona particularly noteworthy. His four NASCAR Cup Series victories all came on tracks where drafting and close-quarters racing are paramount, including a memorable triumph in the summer Daytona Cup Series race in 2017. However, his most significant achievement to date arrived in February 2023, when he captured the prestigious Daytona 500, solidifying his status as one of NASCAR’s premier superspeedway racers.
The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native’s success predates his Cup Series tenure. In the NASCAR Xfinity Series (then known as the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series), Stenhouse Jr. proved to be a dominant force, securing back-to-back championship titles in 2011 and 2012. His consistent performance across these top two NASCAR divisions, accumulating nearly 600 starts, highlights a career built on speed and resilience. Yet, the Truck Series, often considered a proving ground for future Cup Series stars and a platform for experienced drivers seeking different challenges, remained an uncharted territory for Stenhouse Jr. until now.
"I’ve always wanted to run a truck, but never had the opportunity to put something together," Stenhouse Jr. stated in a press release. "When Cody (Efaw) called me, I definitely had a lot of interest to see what all they have been building here at Niece Motorsports, especially looking at their level of competition. With it being at Daytona, obviously winning the 500 was awesome, and I’d love to win a Truck Series race there, too. I’ve always wanted to race a truck, but I wanted it to be competitive – and this checks all of those boxes."

The partnership with Niece Motorsports, a team that has consistently fielded competitive entries in the Truck Series, addresses Stenhouse Jr.’s desire for a capable machine. J.F. Electric has been announced as the primary sponsor for Stenhouse Jr.’s Daytona effort, providing crucial backing for the single-race commitment. Beyond the season opener, Niece Motorsports has indicated plans to field Stenhouse Jr. in a second event: the EchoPark Speedway race in Atlanta, which also features drafting-style competition. This strategic scheduling suggests a focused approach, leveraging Stenhouse Jr.’s strengths on tracks where he has historically excelled.
Cody Efaw, CEO of Niece Motorsports, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. "We are all very excited to welcome Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to our team for his first time racing in the Truck Series," Efaw commented. "I’ve known Ricky for several years now dating back to our time at Roush (now RFK Racing), and he’s always been a natural on super speedways. I believe he will have a true shot at contending for the win at both Daytona and Atlanta." Efaw’s familiarity with Stenhouse Jr. from their Roush Fenway Racing days provides an additional layer of confidence in their ability to work together effectively.
Niece Motorsports has established itself as a competitive force in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series since its inception. Founded by Al Niece, the team has grown from a small operation into a consistent contender, known for its strategic prowess and driver development. In recent seasons, Niece Motorsports has celebrated multiple wins and championship bids, demonstrating its capacity to provide winning equipment. The team’s technical infrastructure and experienced crew chiefs are expected to complement Stenhouse Jr.’s driving talent, creating a formidable combination for the superspeedway events.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway is always a highly anticipated event, characterized by unpredictable racing and dramatic finishes. The 2024 edition is poised to be no different, with a field of drivers eager to start their season with a victory at the iconic track. Stenhouse Jr.’s entry adds a significant storyline to the race, bringing a Cup Series champion with a proven track record on this specific circuit to the series. His experience in navigating the chaotic nature of Daytona’s pack racing, coupled with the Niece Motorsports team’s expertise, positions him as a genuine threat for victory.
The decision to compete in the Truck Series, even for a limited schedule, reflects a broader trend of experienced drivers exploring different avenues within NASCAR. While Stenhouse Jr. remains a full-time Cup Series competitor, this foray into the Truck Series offers him an opportunity to test his skills in a different vehicle and racing environment, potentially bringing fresh perspectives and energy back to his Cup Series campaign. For Niece Motorsports, securing a driver of Stenhouse Jr.’s caliber is a significant coup, providing valuable exposure and a strong chance for success in their season opener.
The addition of Stenhouse Jr. to the Truck Series roster also garners attention from fans who may not typically follow the series closely. His considerable fanbase, cultivated through years of Cup Series competition and his Daytona 500 triumph, is likely to tune in to witness his debut. This influx of interest can contribute to the overall visibility and popularity of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, a critical objective for the sport as it seeks to engage a wider audience.
The schedule of races for Stenhouse Jr. – Daytona and Atlanta – highlights a deliberate strategy. Both tracks are known for their drafting dynamics, where aerodynamic forces and precise car control are crucial. Stenhouse Jr.’s proven ability to excel in these conditions makes him a strong candidate for success. His previous wins at Daytona are a testament to his mastery of drafting and his understanding of how to navigate the intense competition inherent in these races.
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season has historically been a proving ground for talent. Many current Cup Series stars, including Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, and Ryan Blaney, have honed their skills and achieved early career successes in the series. Stenhouse Jr.’s participation, while not indicative of a career transition, adds another prominent name to this lineage of accomplished drivers who have competed in the series. His presence could also inspire younger drivers in the Truck Series, offering them an opportunity to race against a proven champion and learn from his experience.
The implications of Stenhouse Jr.’s debut extend beyond the immediate results of the two races. It signifies a continued commitment from established NASCAR drivers to explore different disciplines within the sport, fostering a dynamic and engaging landscape. For Niece Motorsports, this partnership represents a significant step in their continued pursuit of excellence, aligning themselves with a driver whose Superspeedway pedigree is undeniable. As the countdown to the Daytona 500 intensifies, the anticipation for Stenhouse Jr.’s Truck Series debut will undoubtedly grow, marking a new chapter in his already illustrious NASCAR career.
