Darlington, SC – Rookie NASCAR Cup Series driver Carson Hocevar has addressed recurring comparisons to NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, emphasizing his desire to forge his own identity while acknowledging the admiration he holds for the late "Intimidator." The 21-year-old driver, currently competing for Spire Motorsports, spoke out ahead of the Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway, where he will pilot a special throwback scheme honoring the 1981 season of the seven-time champion.
Hocevar, whose aggressive racing style has drawn parallels to Earnhardt’s no-holds-barred approach, expressed a nuanced perspective on the comparisons. "I don’t really love the comparisons of what they turn into," Hocevar stated, referencing how perceptions of his driving can evolve. "It started by just kind of not apologizing after running into people, basically, and just being really, really aggressive, to turning into kind of the ‘I’m as good as him.’ I was like, I don’t know where that came from."
He continued to articulate his aspiration for individuality: "So, yeah, I just plan on driving. I’m just hoping I’m fast enough or we’re good enough that we can actually be up front and be relevant, especially with that scheme. But, yeah, I’m just me. I’ve been saying it for a long time. I like just being me. You know, it’s a lot easier that way for my sake. I don’t like to have to be anybody I’m not."
The special throwback livery for the Darlington race is a collaborative effort with primary sponsor Chili’s Bar & Grill. The design pays homage to the 1981 season, a transitional year for Dale Earnhardt, Sr., during which he drove for a combination of Rod Osterlund Racing, JD Stacy Motorsports, and later, Richard Childress Racing. This particular season saw Earnhardt achieve his first Cup Series win at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The initiative to run a throwback scheme at Darlington, even outside the official throwback weekend, was driven by Chili’s. The restaurant chain sought to connect with NASCAR’s rich history and honor Earnhardt’s legacy through Hocevar’s car. "Yeah, so it was Chili’s idea that kind of came to me," Hocevar explained. "They were like, is there any scheme you want to run? This was last year… they were like, we want to run a throwback. Instantly, I was like, I want to run the Bud No. 8. I thought it was perfect."
However, the final design evolved to incorporate a "cowboy theme" championed by Chili’s, aligning with their "Ride the Dente" promotional campaign. "But then they were like, well, we kind of want to go with this cowboy theme… what about this? So it was all their idea. I didn’t understand for a minute because I was like, blue and yellow, that doesn’t really work with your colors. But once they kind of explained it, their thought process, they just really wanted the picture recreated and fit in their cowboy theme with ‘Ride the Dente’ and everything. It made a lot of sense for their side."
This creative direction also taps into Hocevar’s personal aesthetic preferences. He admitted to a particular fondness for the iconic cowboy hats worn by drivers of Earnhardt’s and Richard Petty’s era, seeing the Chili’s campaign as an opportunity to incorporate a similar flair.
The decision by Chili’s to sponsor a throwback scheme, particularly at a track like Darlington known for its historical significance, underscores a growing trend of sponsors seeking unique activations to connect with fans. In previous years, many sponsors were hesitant to deviate from their established brand identities for one-off specialty schemes. However, the current landscape often encourages unique partnerships that can generate buzz and stand out.
Hocevar’s enthusiasm for the project was evident. "I really wanted to do one," he said. "But, no, this was their idea even before throwback weekend went away. I felt like this one made a lot of sense for them, just because they specifically bought this race kind of with that in mind, so this was important to them." He also recognized the strategic advantage of a distinct design: "And also, too, when it all stops and everybody goes away, you’re then kind of the only one running a throwback or a lot less emphasis and you can kind of stand out more, which is good for a brand and their idea, I have to imagine."
Carson Hocevar’s career in the NASCAR Cup Series is still in its nascent stages. He made his debut in 2023 with Rick Ware Racing before transitioning to Spire Motorsports for the 2024 season. In his limited Cup Series starts, Hocevar has shown flashes of the aggressive driving that draws comparisons to Earnhardt, often pushing the limits of his equipment and the competition. His performance in the Xfinity Series, where he has secured multiple wins with JR Motorsports, has been a strong indicator of his potential.
The Darlington Raceway, often referred to as "The Lady in Black," presents a formidable challenge. Its notoriously difficult surface, characterized by its abrasive nature and tight turns, demands precision and resilience from drivers. Earnhardt Sr. himself was a master of Darlington, capturing 9 victories at the track throughout his illustrious career. The track’s historical significance is further amplified by its role in hosting significant throwback events, celebrating the sport’s heritage.
For Hocevar and Spire Motorsports, the Goodyear 400 represents an opportunity to gain valuable experience and potentially achieve a strong result. The team has been steadily improving throughout the season, and a solid performance at Darlington could serve as a significant morale boost and a testament to their development. The throwback scheme, while a nod to the past, is intended to propel Hocevar’s future aspirations in the sport. His commitment to being authentic and his drive to succeed on his own terms are key elements of his burgeoning career narrative. The young driver’s ability to balance his admiration for NASCAR’s icons with his personal ambition will be a defining factor in his journey through the highly competitive world of stock car racing.
