Former Formula 1 driver and renowned Sky Sports analyst Martin Brundle has voiced his belief that the potential recruitment of Jonathan Wheatley would represent a "smart move" for the Aston Martin F1 team. However, Brundle underscored a critical prerequisite for the Silverstone-based outfit: the urgent need to stabilise its often-shifting management structure, which he described as a "revolving door."
The speculation surrounding Wheatley’s future intensified following his departure from Audi’s nascent Formula 1 project (currently operating as Sauber Motorsport AG) on March 20. Audi confirmed at the time that Wheatley had left his role as Team Principal with immediate effect, citing personal reasons. While the 58-year-old British motorsport veteran has yet to publicly confirm his next career step, multiple reports, including those from Motorsport.com, indicate that Aston Martin is his most probable destination.
Brundle, speaking on the Sky Sports F1 Show, admitted that the news of Wheatley’s potential move initially caught him by surprise, despite earlier whispers circulating within the paddock during the season. "They’ve had such a revolving door of management at Aston Martin, haven’t they? And some curious decisions I think they’ve taken about who does what and who’s in charge," Brundle observed, reflecting on the team’s history of leadership changes. "Really curious, frankly, just observing it and knowing some of the people involved."
Jonathan Wheatley brings a formidable pedigree to any Formula 1 operation. His career in the sport spans decades, most notably his extended and highly successful tenure as Sporting Director at Red Bull Racing. Wheatley was an integral part of the Red Bull setup that secured four consecutive Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships with Sebastian Vettel between 2010 and 2013, and more recently, the dominant championship campaigns with Max Verstappen from 2021 onwards. He earned a reputation as a master of operational efficiency, particularly famed for overseeing Red Bull’s consistently rapid pit stops, which frequently set industry benchmarks. His ability to maintain calm and order under pressure, coupled with a deep understanding of race weekend logistics and strategic execution, made him a cornerstone of Red Bull’s success.

His brief move to Audi’s F1 project, announced in late 2023, was seen as a significant coup for the German manufacturer as they prepared for their full entry into the sport in 2026. Wheatley’s appointment as Team Principal was expected to bring crucial experience in building and leading a championship-contending team from the ground up. His sudden departure just months into the role, attributed to "personal reasons," therefore sent ripples through the F1 community and fueled immediate speculation about his next move, especially given the considerable commitment involved in relocating for the Audi project.
Brundle acknowledged the gravity of Wheatley’s initial commitment to Audi, stating, "I don’t think he would have abandoned the Audi project and moving the family to Switzerland and all of that lightly." This underscores the likelihood that a compelling offer and clear vision from Aston Martin would be necessary to facilitate such a significant career shift for Wheatley. Brundle added, "So let’s assume when they’ve got through the negotiations or the gardening leave or whatever’s involved here that he will end up at Aston Martin." The concept of ‘gardening leave’ is common in Formula 1, where high-profile personnel are often contractually obliged to take a period away from the sport between roles to prevent immediate transfer of sensitive intellectual property to a rival team.
For Aston Martin, the pursuit of Wheatley aligns with owner Lawrence Stroll’s ambitious vision for the team. Since acquiring the Force India team in 2018 (rebranding it as Racing Point in 2019 and then Aston Martin in 2021), Stroll has invested heavily in infrastructure and personnel, aiming to transform the outfit into a championship contender. This investment includes a state-of-the-art new factory and a cutting-edge wind tunnel at their Silverstone base, symbolising a clear long-term commitment.
However, the team’s journey has been marked by significant management changes, which Brundle alluded to. The departure of long-serving Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer to Alpine in early 2022 was a notable shift. Martin Whitmarsh, a former McLaren Team Principal, was brought in as Group CEO of Aston Martin Performance Technologies, overseeing the broader F1 operation. Mike Krack, formerly with BMW and Porsche, was appointed Team Principal. The team also secured high-profile technical talent from rival teams, including Dan Fallows as Technical Director from Red Bull and Eric Blandin as Deputy Technical Director from Mercedes. While these recruitments demonstrate a clear intent to strengthen the technical and leadership foundations, the constant flux has arguably hindered the cohesive integration required for sustained top-tier performance.
Brundle believes Wheatley’s experience could be pivotal in addressing some of these internal dynamics. "Adrian Newey knows him incredibly well from the Red Bull days, of course," Brundle noted, highlighting the long-standing professional relationship between Wheatley and Red Bull’s legendary Chief Technical Officer. "And I think Jonathan’s pragmatism and hands-on approach would glue some things together there. I think it would be a smart move."
Wheatley’s expertise in operational management, race weekend execution, and fostering a high-performance culture could provide the crucial stability and clarity that Brundle suggests Aston Martin currently lacks. The "glue things together" metaphor implies a need for improved internal communication, streamlined processes, and a more unified operational philosophy, particularly given the rapid expansion and influx of personnel from diverse backgrounds.
In terms of on-track performance, Aston Martin showed significant promise in the early part of the 2023 season, with Fernando Alonso securing multiple podium finishes. However, their development pace lagged behind rivals in the latter half of the year, and they finished fifth in the Constructors’ Championship. The 2024 season has seen them consolidate their position as a solid midfield contender, but they remain some distance from consistently challenging the front-runners. The team’s driver lineup features the experienced two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, whose skill and race craft remain undeniable, alongside Lance Stroll, son of the team owner, whose performances have been more inconsistent.
Brundle also light-heartedly speculated on potential personal motivations for Wheatley, such as a desire to move back to the UK, hinting at the complex factors influencing such high-level career decisions in Formula 1. However, he reiterated the professional benefit, stating, "Jonathan would be a good catch for them."
The core of Brundle’s concern, however, revolves around Aston Martin’s systemic management instability. His comparison of the team to a "Premier League football team" undergoing frequent managerial changes is a stark observation. Such situations in professional sports often lead to an environment where "everybody just runs for cover in the team and keeps their heads down because they don’t know what’s happening next, who they report to, what the strategy is, or whatever," Brundle explained. This uncertainty can stifle initiative, impede long-term planning, and ultimately undermine team morale and performance.
For Aston Martin, integrating a figure of Wheatley’s calibre requires not just his presence but a commitment to a stable and clearly defined management structure around him. The team’s substantial investment in infrastructure and talent will only yield the desired championship success if accompanied by a cohesive and enduring leadership framework. The potential arrival of Jonathan Wheatley could be a significant step towards achieving operational excellence, but as Brundle highlights, it must be part of a broader commitment to managerial stability to truly unlock the team’s full potential. The coming months will reveal whether Aston Martin can integrate Wheatley effectively and heed Brundle’s caution to solidify its leadership for sustained competitiveness.
