Alex Bowman, a prominent driver for Hendrick Motorsports, will miss a minimum of the next three NASCAR Cup Series races due to ongoing symptoms of vertigo, the team confirmed recently. The 32-year-old racer was forced to exit his No. 48 Chevrolet during the Cup Series event at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) on March 2nd. Myatt Snider completed the race in Bowman’s place. Following the incident, Bowman was diagnosed with vertigo, a condition affecting the inner ear and causing dizziness and balance issues.
Since his withdrawal at COTA, Bowman has been unable to compete in subsequent races at Phoenix Raceway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Hendrick Motorsports enlisted the services of HMS sim driver Anthony Alfredo for the Phoenix event and turned to 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Justin Allgaier to fill the seat at Las Vegas. Allgaier finished 25th in the No. 48 Chevrolet at Las Vegas.
Hendrick Motorsports has now officially announced that Bowman’s recovery period will extend beyond the upcoming Easter off-weekend, meaning he will also be absent from the Cup Series races scheduled for Darlington Raceway, Martinsville Speedway, and Bristol Motor Speedway.
Jeff Andrews, President and General Manager of Hendrick Motorsports, provided an update on Bowman’s condition and the team’s commitment to his well-being. "Alex continues to experience symptoms, so we are following the guidance of the medical team and giving him the time he needs to recover," Andrews stated. "We see how hard he’s working to get back behind the wheel, and we’re looking forward to his return when he’s medically cleared. Everyone at Hendrick Motorsports is 100% behind Alex."

Justin Allgaier, a seasoned competitor with extensive experience in NASCAR’s national series, will continue to drive the No. 48 Chevrolet in Bowman’s absence. Allgaier is currently competing full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports. His recent performance at Las Vegas saw him secure a 25th-place finish, a respectable outcome given the circumstances of stepping into a new ride mid-season.
Andrews expressed confidence in Allgaier’s ability to manage the demanding schedule and perform at a high level. "Justin is a true professional and someone we have tremendous confidence in," Andrews added. "He’s had success at the upcoming tracks, and we appreciate him stepping in to help the No. 48 team. We’re also grateful to our partners at JR Motorsports for understanding the situation and making Justin available."
The impact of Bowman’s absence extends beyond the Cup Series. He was also scheduled to compete in the No. 88 JR Motorsports entry in this weekend’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Darlington Raceway. However, due to his ongoing health issues, he will be replaced by his Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Kyle Larson.
This latest period on the sidelines marks the third time in the past five seasons that Bowman has been forced to miss racing action due to injury. In 2022, he was sidelined for five races due to a concussion. The following year, in 2023, he missed three races owing to a back injury. These recurring health challenges highlight the physical demands of professional stock car racing and the critical importance of driver health and safety protocols.
Bowman, who joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2016, has become a consistent contender in the Cup Series, known for his resilience and skill. He secured his first Cup Series win in 2019 at Chicagoland Speedway and has since added multiple victories to his resume, including a significant triumph at Dover International Speedway in 2021, which secured him a spot in the Championship Four. His absence is a notable loss for Hendrick Motorsports, one of NASCAR’s most successful and storied organizations, which fields four full-time Cup Series entries. The team, led by Rick Hendrick, has a rich history of success and a deep roster of talent.
The No. 48 Chevrolet, historically driven by seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, has been piloted by Bowman since the 2018 season. Under his tenure, the team has continued to be competitive, frequently contending for playoff berths and race wins. Bowman’s current health situation poses a significant challenge for his championship aspirations in the 2024 season.
The NASCAR Cup Series season is a grueling 36-race marathon, and missing even a handful of races can significantly impact a driver’s playoff chances. The playoff system, which begins after the 26-race regular season, rewards consistent performance and race wins. Bowman’s current inability to compete puts him at a considerable disadvantage in accumulating the necessary points and wins to qualify for the postseason.
Vertigo can manifest in various ways, including spinning sensations (vertigo), loss of balance, nausea, and disorientation. These symptoms are particularly dangerous for race car drivers who operate at high speeds and require split-second decision-making and precise control. The forces experienced in a NASCAR vehicle, including high G-forces during cornering and braking, can exacerbate these conditions, making a full recovery paramount before a return to competition.
The medical team’s guidance is a critical factor in Bowman’s return to racing. NASCAR’s medical staff, in conjunction with team physicians, rigorously evaluates drivers to ensure they are medically fit to compete. This process involves thorough assessments to confirm that symptoms have subsided and that the driver can safely perform their duties behind the wheel.
Hendrick Motorsports, with its extensive resources and experienced personnel, is well-equipped to support Bowman through his recovery process. The team’s commitment to driver well-being is a testament to its overarching philosophy of prioritizing the health and safety of its competitors. The organization has a history of navigating driver injuries and illnesses, demonstrating resilience and adaptability.
Justin Allgaier’s role as a substitute driver is crucial for the No. 48 team’s ability to maintain a competitive presence on the track. Allgaier, a veteran of over 300 Xfinity Series starts with 17 wins, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success. His understanding of stock car racing and his ability to adapt to different machinery make him a valuable asset during this challenging period. His commitment to both his full-time Xfinity Series campaign with JR Motorsports and his interim Cup Series duties underscores his dedication and professionalism.
The NASCAR Cup Series calendar is characterized by a diverse range of tracks, from the fast, sweeping superspeedways to the tight, unforgiving short tracks. Darlington Raceway, known as "The Lady in Black," is renowned for its challenging layout and abrasive surface. Martinsville Speedway is a half-mile paperclip track demanding intense braking and precise maneuvering. Bristol Motor Speedway, a high-banked half-mile oval, is often described as "The Last Great Colosseum," known for its close-quarters racing and frequent cautions. Allgaier’s experience at these venues will be instrumental in his efforts to keep the No. 48 team competitive.
The ongoing situation with Alex Bowman serves as a stark reminder of the physical toll that professional motorsports can take on athletes. The dedication and resilience of drivers like Bowman, coupled with the support of their teams and the meticulous oversight of racing organizations, are essential for navigating these challenging circumstances and ensuring a safe and successful return to the track when medically cleared.
