Alex Bowman Withdraws from COTA Race Mid-Competition Due to Sudden Illness, Myatt Snider Steps In

Circuit of the Americas, Austin, TX – Hendrick Motorsports driver Alex Bowman was compelled to exit his No. 48 Chevrolet during Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at the Circuit of the Americas after experiencing a sudden and severe bout of illness. The abrupt withdrawal necessitated a mid-race driver change, with Xfinity Series competitor Myatt Snider taking the wheel to complete the event.

The incident occurred with approximately 25 laps remaining in the 65-lap race on the challenging road course. Bowman, who has historically performed well at COTA, signaled to his crew chief, Blake Harris, that he could no longer continue. His radio transmissions indicated increasing distress, with Bowman stating, "I don’t know if I’m going to make it," while running 28th. He subsequently fell outside the top 30 as his condition worsened.

Spotter Kevin Hamlin and crew chief Blake Harris communicated with Bowman, offering support and assuring him that the team’s priority was his well-being. "It’s your call," Hamlin reportedly responded, with Harris adding that it was acceptable for Bowman to exit the car if necessary. The team conveyed a message of support, emphasizing that immediate finishing position and championship points were secondary to his health: "There’s no difference in finishing right now or not. Points don’t matter, whatever you need."

Bowman then steered his No. 48 Chevrolet to pit road and behind the team’s garage area, where he exited the vehicle. He was subsequently evaluated and released from the infield care center, departing the track under his own power.

Hendrick Motorsports confirmed the situation in a post-race statement: "It was an unexpected situation. Alex wasn’t feeling well enough to continue, so we made the call to get him out of the car. It came on suddenly. He was seen in the care center and received fluids, but we don’t have anything further to share at this time. We’re grateful to Myatt for stepping in on such short notice."

The driver substitution was reviewed and approved by NASCAR officials. Myatt Snider, who was serving as a pit reporter for NASCAR on FOX during the race, was called upon to pilot the No. 48 machine. Snider brings a decorated background in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, where he has secured multiple victories, though this marked his debut in a NASCAR Cup Series car.

When Snider took control of the No. 48 Chevrolet, the car was running 36th and was five laps down. Snider maintained that position for the remainder of the race, ultimately crossing the finish line in 36th place. The only other car not to finish was the No. 19 of Chase Briscoe, who retired due to an incident. Under NASCAR regulations, Bowman will be credited with the finishing position and any points accrued by Snider during his stint.

The early exit from the Circuit of the Americas race represented a significant setback for Bowman’s 2024 championship aspirations. Prior to this event, he sat 32nd in the driver standings after a challenging start to the season, which included a 19th-place finish at Daytona and a 24th-place result at Atlanta Motor Speedway. His performance at COTA was particularly disappointing given his strong track record at the venue, where he has achieved an average finish of 8.5 across his previous Cup Series starts there, including a victory in 2021.
