Concord, NC – Alex Bowman, driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 48 Chevrolet, has received the medical clearance to resume competition in the NASCAR Cup Series, marking a significant return after a period sidelined by vertigo. The announcement came a week earlier than initially anticipated, with Bowman expressing a focused intent to methodically maximize the remainder of the season.
Bowman had been absent from the cockpit for the past four races, a consequence of the debilitating vertigo that affected his ability to race. His clearance was contingent upon successfully passing comprehensive medical evaluations and demonstrating his fitness through competitive laps in a street car at the Ten Tenths Motor Club in Concord, North Carolina.
At 32 years old, Bowman conveyed a sense of readiness for his return, tempered by realistic expectations for his immediate performance. Hendrick Motorsports has confirmed that no substitute drivers will be on standby for Bowman this weekend, a situation that had seen Anthony Alfredo and Justin Allgaier fill the No. 48 seat during his absence.
Reflecting on the crucial tests at Ten Tenths Motor Club, Bowman detailed the primary obstacle he needed to overcome: "The biggest thing was not getting dizzy. I mean, that’s the main thing, right? We went to Ten Tenths that first week, and I could run a couple of laps, but then I was ready to throw up and dizzy — just not feeling well. I couldn’t drive and put myself through those G Forces and feeling well through it." Since that initial assessment, Bowman has engaged in various forms of training, including karting and pit practice, alongside an intensive interval training regimen developed with medical professionals. "I feel really good," he affirmed.

Bowman clarified that his vertigo was not attributed to a single cause but rather a confluence of factors requiring a multifaceted approach to recovery. "Just a multitude of different things that we kind of had to work through to get me back feeling well," he stated. "So honestly, we worked through many different things and it’s hard to pinpoint one exact thing but the good news is that now I’m feeling really well and am ready to go."
The most challenging moment, Bowman admitted, was when his symptoms flared significantly at the Circuit of the Americas, necessitating his withdrawal in the closing laps and replacement by Myatt Snider.
Given the severity of his previous symptoms and the demanding nature of the upcoming Bristol Motor Speedway race, with its high-banked turns and intense G-forces, the decision to return this weekend prompts inquiry. Bowman responded with a characteristic laugh, "Because they said I could. I mean, I’m a race car driver so if you tell me I’m clear, I’m going to go do it." He acknowledged the inherent difficulty of his chosen return venue: "Yeah, this is probably the worst place possible to come back to because it’s physical and extremely difficult."
He elaborated on the competitive landscape at Bristol, noting, "The margins from the front of the field to the back are tiny. You look at qualifying and every hundredth is multiple spots." Bowman’s own recent performance history at Bristol is strong, having secured two of the last three pole positions. However, he tempered expectations, stating, "I haven’t qualified a car in a month so the expectation is that it’s going to be extremely difficult to contend at one of my best tracks… I think those expectations probably change this weekend."
Bowman’s immediate objective for the Bristol race is pragmatic: to secure a top-10 or top-15 finish and subsequently build momentum throughout the remainder of the season.
Hendrick Motorsports president Jeff Andrews expressed unwavering support for Bowman’s return, emphasizing his integral role within the organization. "Alex is part of our team and a key teammate for us and has been an integral part of our company for quite some time," Andrews commented. "We were willing to do what we needed to do to wait for him and get him back at the right time."
Andrews lauded Bowman’s dedication, stating, "I think it’s a testament to Alex and how hard he worked to be back a week early. These guys are athletes and there are no shortage of stories about how hard they work to overcome adversity and return from that earlier than expected. We’re proud to have him back and are ready to go racing and see where the points fall."
The path to contention for the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, which requires a top-16 standing by the end of the regular season, appears to be a formidable challenge for Bowman. He currently trails the playoff cutline by 144 points, necessitating multiple race victories to close the gap.
Bowman also conveyed profound gratitude to Hendrick Motorsports for their steadfast support through a series of significant health challenges, including a concussion in 2022 and a broken back sustained in a Sprint Car crash in 2023, prior to the recent vertigo bout. "It just meant a lot to have everybody at HMS’s support and also everybody at Ally and Chevrolet and everybody that makes this deal possible, right," Bowman said. "Like, I’ve put HMS in a tough spot multiple times now in the last, you know, five years or whatever it’s been since 2022. So yeah, they’ve probably given me more grace at times than I deserve. I’m super thankful for that and just ready to get back rolling."
His return to the No. 48 Chevrolet signifies a renewed chapter for Bowman and Hendrick Motorsports as they navigate the remainder of the NASCAR Cup Series season.
