Supercars Champion Shane van Gisbergen Set for NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Return at Watkins Glen

Niece Motorsports has confirmed that three-time Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen will compete in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at Watkins Glen International on May 8th. Van Gisbergen, a familiar face in the NASCAR Cup Series, will pilot the No. 4 Chevrolet Silverado, marking his second career start in the Truck Series. He will be joined by his Cup Series teammate, Ross Chastain, who also drives for Niece Motorsports.

This upcoming appearance at Watkins Glen represents a significant opportunity for van Gisbergen to further showcase his road-racing prowess on American soil. While he has achieved remarkable success in his native Australia and demonstrated flashes of brilliance in NASCAR’s top tier, his Truck Series record remains nascent. His sole previous outing in the Craftsman Truck Series occurred in 2023 at the IRP short track, a race that notably marked his first oval experience in any NASCAR discipline. Despite the unfamiliar territory, van Gisbergen secured a respectable 19th-place finish driving for Niece Motorsports.

Van Gisbergen expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event, stating, "I’m really excited to have the opportunity to race for Niece Motorsports at Watkins Glen. I raced the truck once back in 2023 at IRP and it was epic! Happy to be back at one of my favorite tracks. Hopefully we have a good crack at it. Thanks to Niece Motorsports, Circle B Diecast, DQS, J.F. Electric, Chevrolet and Trackhouse for giving me the opportunity. It’s going to be a lot of fun."

Niece Motorsports, a team with a decorated history in the Truck Series, boasts nine victories. This impressive tally includes five wins by Ross Chastain and four by Carson Hocevar. However, the team is still seeking its maiden victory on a road course, a statistic van Gisbergen’s participation may help to alter.

Team President and CEO Cody Efaw highlighted van Gisbergen’s road-racing acumen as a primary factor in the decision. "Shane’s ability on road courses made him a clear priority for our organization at Watkins Glen," Efaw commented. "When we learned Shane had interest in running Truck Series races, it felt like a natural fit. Our fab and body shop have put in a tremendous amount of work building new road course trucks, and we’re confident in what we’re bringing to the track."

Efaw further elaborated on the team’s strategic approach to the road course event, adding, "With Shane and Ross – both proven Cup Series road course winners – paired with Andres Perez de Lara, a talented road course racer in his own right, we like the strength of our lineup, and expect to be in contention for the win." The inclusion of Perez de Lara, a promising road course competitor, underscores Niece Motorsports’ commitment to assembling a formidable lineup for the challenge presented by Watkins Glen.

Shane van Gisbergen’s career trajectory in motorsport is a testament to his exceptional talent and adaptability. His dominance in the Supercars Championship, where he secured three consecutive titles from 2021 to 2023, solidified his reputation as one of the premier drivers in touring car racing. His transition to NASCAR in 2023 saw him make an immediate impact, capturing a sensational debut victory in the Cup Series at the Chicago Street Race, a track that also presented a significant road-course challenge. This remarkable achievement marked him as the first driver in NASCAR Cup Series history to win in his debut start.

Beyond his Supercars accolades, van Gisbergen has amassed a substantial record of success across various racing disciplines. His six NASCAR Cup Series wins, including the aforementioned historic Chicago triumph, have demonstrated his capacity to compete and win against some of the sport’s most seasoned veterans. Furthermore, his five victories in the Xfinity Series, where he has made select appearances, highlight his versatility and skill across different NASCAR national series.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, known for its aggressive racing and diverse track types, presents a unique set of challenges. Van Gisbergen’s previous experience at IRP, while a short track and not a road course, provided valuable insight into the nuances of Truck Series competition. His ability to adapt quickly to new machinery and racing environments has been a hallmark of his career.

Watkins Glen International, a circuit steeped in motorsport history, is renowned for its demanding layout, featuring a blend of high-speed straights, challenging esses, and tight technical corners. Road courses have historically been a strong suit for van Gisbergen, and his performance at the Chicago Street Race further underscored his exceptional car control and strategic acumen on circuits that demand precision and tire management.

Niece Motorsports, under the guidance of team owner Al Niece and with Efaw at the helm, has steadily built a competitive program in the Truck Series. The team’s consistent presence and ability to attract high-caliber drivers like Chastain, Hocevar, and now van Gisbergen, speak to its growing stature within the NASCAR paddock. Their nine Truck Series wins represent a significant achievement for a team that has continued to evolve and improve since its inception.

The convergence of van Gisbergen’s road-racing prowess, Niece Motorsports’ evolving road course program, and the challenging nature of Watkins Glen sets the stage for an intriguing contest. While van Gisbergen has yet to secure a win in the Truck Series, his proven ability to adapt and compete at the highest levels suggests he will be a strong contender. The addition of Chastain, a multiple-time winner at Watkins Glen in the Cup Series, further bolsters Niece Motorsports’ prospects.

The upcoming race at Watkins Glen is not only a significant event for van Gisbergen’s burgeoning NASCAR career but also a crucial opportunity for Niece Motorsports to achieve a long-sought-after road course victory. The team’s investment in new road course trucks and the strategic pairing of experienced Cup Series drivers with emerging talent like Perez de Lara indicate a focused effort to maximize their potential on this particular circuit. Fans will be eager to witness how the Supercars champion navigates the complexities of Watkins Glen in the fiercely competitive NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
