Las Vegas, NV – In a dramatic turn of events during the 2026 High Limit Racing season opener at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway dirt track, NASCAR Cup Series driver Ty Gibbs experienced a significant airborne crash. The incident occurred Thursday night, just miles from the intermediate asphalt oval where Gibbs is slated to compete in the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series race.
Gibbs, piloting a potent 410 winged sprint car, was running a strong fourth position when his #84 machine made contact with the car of fellow competitor Corey Day, a regular in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. The collision, which originated from Gibbs driving over the right-rear wheel of Day’s entry, sent Gibbs’ sprint car airborne. It then rolled multiple times before violently impacting the catch-fencing at the exit of Turn 2, ultimately returning to the ground.
Remarkably, the 23-year-old emerged from the severely damaged vehicle under his own power and was able to walk away from the accident scene, a testament to the safety advancements in open-wheel racing.
Speaking to Flo Racing immediately following the incident, Gibbs downplayed the severity of the crash in relation to his personal well-being. "Yeah, I’m fine," he stated. "I think Corey just got super loose there and I got pointed to where it was hooked up and just caught his right-rear a little bit, and dug the frontend in. So yeah, we’re good — just unfortunate. We’ll come back up tomorrow and go get them."
