Vertigo Forces Alex Bowman Out of Phoenix NASCAR Cup Race; Anthony Alfredo to Substitute

Phoenix, AZ – Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, will miss this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway due to a diagnosis of vertigo. The announcement comes after Bowman was forced to exit his vehicle mid-race during the previous event at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), where Myatt Snider temporarily took over driving duties and completed the race, costing the team five laps.

Following his withdrawal at COTA, Bowman underwent a medical evaluation that led to the diagnosis of vertigo. Hendrick Motorsports confirmed that Anthony Alfredo, a driver currently competing full-time in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and a familiar face within the Hendrick organization as their simulator driver, will pilot the No. 48 Chevrolet in Bowman’s absence.

Jeff Andrews, president of Hendrick Motorsports, expressed the team’s commitment to Bowman’s health and well-being. "Alex has worked very hard over the last several days," Andrews stated. "We’re encouraged by the progress he’s making, but we have to prioritize his health above all else. It’s obviously frustrating for him because he’s a competitor and wants to be in the race car, especially at his home track. We’ll continue to support Alex and look forward to his return as soon as he’s medically cleared."

Alfredo brings a degree of experience to the No. 48 machine, having accumulated 43 previous Cup Series starts. His recent attempt to qualify for the Daytona 500 with Beard Motorsports ended with disqualification following a post-race inspection failure, despite making the field. In his Cup career, Alfredo has secured two top-ten finishes, with his best result being a sixth-place finish at Talladega in 2024.

The absence of Bowman presents a significant challenge for his Chase for the Championship aspirations. Hendrick Motorsports intends to petition for a medical waiver from NASCAR, allowing Bowman to remain eligible for the playoffs despite missing a race. Currently, Bowman sits 36th in the championship standings, which is last among full-time drivers. His 2026 season has been marked by challenging finishes, including 40th at Daytona, 23rd at Atlanta, and 36th at COTA prior to his withdrawal.

This latest setback marks the third time in the past five seasons that Bowman has been sidelined due to health-related issues. In 2022, he missed five races due to a concussion, and in 2023, he was sidelined for three races with a back injury. These recurring health concerns highlight the demanding physical nature of NASCAR racing and the importance of driver well-being.

The diagnosis of vertigo, a condition characterized by sensations of spinning or dizziness, can significantly impair a driver’s ability to react and maintain control at high speeds, making it unsafe for Bowman to compete. The intricate nature of oval racing, particularly at tracks like Phoenix Raceway, requires precise inputs and constant awareness, conditions that are incompatible with the symptoms of vertigo.

Phoenix Raceway, a 1-mile oval, is known for its challenging transitions and demanding layout, often referred to as a "dogleg" due to its unique frontstretch configuration. The track requires drivers to manage tire wear, navigate traffic, and execute precise braking and acceleration, all of which would be severely compromised by the disorientation associated with vertigo.

The team’s decision to replace Bowman with Alfredo underscores the collaborative environment within Hendrick Motorsports and the broader NASCAR community.
