Oscar Collazo Defends Unified Titles Against Jayson Vayson in California Doubleheader.

INDIO, California – Unified strawweight champion Oscar Collazo is set to defend his WBO and WBA titles against Jayson Vayson in the main event of a championship boxing doubleheader at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. The card also features undisputed flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora defending her titles against Alexas Kubicki. The event is scheduled for Sept. 20 and will be streamed live on DAZN.

Oscar "El Pupilo" Collazo (12-0, 9 KOs), a native of Villalba, Puerto Rico, has rapidly ascended the ranks of the strawweight division since turning professional in 2020. Collazo’s amateur background provided a solid foundation for his transition to the professional circuit. In only his seventh professional bout, he demonstrated his potential by defeating Melvin Jerusalem to claim the WBO title. This victory has gained further significance as Jerusalem subsequently captured the WBC title and has successfully defended it twice.

Collazo’s trajectory continued upward as he successfully defended the WBO title three times before adding the WBA strap to his collection in November 2024. This was achieved with a dominant performance against Knockout CP Freshmart, ending Freshmart’s nearly decade-long reign as champion. In his first defense as a unified champion, Collazo showcased his power by stopping Edwin Cano with a body shot in March.

Jayson Vayson (14-1-1, 8 KOs), hailing from the Philippines, represents a significant step up in competition for Collazo. Vayson has experienced fluctuations in weight, having competed in divisions ranging from 105 to 115 pounds. He is now set to compete at 105 pounds once again. Vayson’s most notable victory came against former strawweight champion Ryuya Yamanaka in 2023. However, his sole loss occurred in the fight preceding the Yamanaka bout, where he suffered a unanimous decision defeat against Seigo Yuri Akui, losing every round on the official scorecards.

Gabriela "Sweet Poison" Fundora (15-0, 7 KOs), the undisputed flyweight champion and sister of junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora, has quickly established herself in the division. After turning professional in May 2021, she fought 12 times in two years, showcasing her activity and commitment. Fundora captured the IBF title in October 2023 with a fifth-round knockout of Arely Mucino.

Following two successful IBF title defenses, Fundora unified the division by winning the WBA, WBO, and WBC belts with a seventh-round TKO victory over Gabriela Celeste Alaniz in November 2024. She has since defended her undisputed status once, securing another seventh-round stoppage against Marilyn Badillo Amaya in April.

Alexas Kubicki (13-1, 2 KOs) steps in as a late replacement for Fundora’s original opponent, Ayelen Granadino, who was unable to secure a visa to enter the United States. The Canadian fighter enters the bout riding a seven-fight winning streak. However, none of Kubicki’s previous opponents have been at Fundora’s level, making this a significant challenge for the challenger.

The Collazo vs. Vayson fight card is scheduled as follows:

  • Oscar Collazo vs. Jayson Vayson, 12 rounds, for Collazo’s WBO and WBA strawweight titles
  • Gabriela Fundora vs. Alexas Kubicki, 10 rounds, for Fundora’s WBO, WBA, WBC and IBF flyweight titles

Where to Watch Collazo vs. Vayson

The event will be streamed live on DAZN, a subscription-based sports streaming service.

  • Date: Sept. 20
  • Start Time: 8 p.m. ET (Main Card)
  • Location: Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, Indio, California
  • Stream: DAZN (Subscription Required)

Collazo has established himself as a top-tier competitor in the strawweight division. His victory over Jerusalem, who is widely regarded as one of the best in the division, underscores his abilities. In contrast, Vayson’s resume is less impressive, with only one significant win and a previous defeat where he was comprehensively outscored. Considering these factors, Collazo is favored to retain his titles.

Expert Prediction: Oscar Collazo via TKO in Round 8.
