BKFC President David Feldman Details Strategic Future for Darren Till Amidst High-Profile Crossover Fight Speculation

Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) President David Feldman has outlined an intricate strategic path for former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) title challenger Darren Till, emphasizing long-term commitment while acknowledging the allure of lucrative crossover opportunities, including potential bouts against figures like Jake Paul. Feldman’s comments shed light on the evolving landscape of combat sports, where promotions must balance exclusive contracts with fighters’ aspirations for significant external paydays.

Darren Till, a prominent figure in mixed martial arts for over a decade, recently found himself at a crossroads following a period of transition in his combat sports career. Prior to his current engagement with BKFC, Till had been a subject of considerable speculation regarding a potential boxing match against YouTube sensation turned professional boxer, Jake Paul. These talks ultimately did not materialize, with Till instead opting to face Professional Fighters League (PFL) welterweight Cedric Doumbe in his return to boxing in October 2023. That contest, held in Paris, saw Till suffer a fourth-round technical knockout loss, marking a difficult return to the squared circle outside of his MMA comfort zone.

Following his boxing setback, Till, known as "The Gorilla" for his aggressive fighting style and formidable striking, pivoted to bare-knuckle boxing, signing an initial three-fight deal with BKFC. This move signaled a new chapter for the Liverpool native, who had built a significant fan base during his tenure in the UFC. His transition to bare-knuckle fighting has been marked by immediate success, with Till securing two victories under the BKFC banner thus far, maintaining an undefeated record in the burgeoning sport. These wins have quickly established him as a marquee attraction for the promotion, capitalizing on his established name recognition and visceral fighting approach.

Feldman, a driving force behind BKFC’s rapid expansion and increasing mainstream visibility, confirmed the promotion’s ambitious plans for Till beyond his initial contract. "We have options," Feldman stated to MMA Fighting, indicating a flexible contractual arrangement designed to benefit both the fighter and the organization. He further elaborated on the positive working relationship between BKFC, Till, and his management team, which has facilitated a more open dialogue regarding the fighter’s career trajectory. This collaborative approach appears crucial in navigating the complex financial incentives present in contemporary combat sports.

A key element of Till’s contractual structure, according to Feldman, is the inclusion of provisions for potential high-profile engagements outside of BKFC. "There is a fight or two outside of BKFC that he would like that would be a really, really big payday for him. That’s why we did it as an option," Feldman explained. This strategic concession underscores BKFC’s understanding of the substantial financial draws that can accompany crossover bouts, particularly those involving figures like Jake Paul, who has consistently generated significant pay-per-view revenue. Despite these external possibilities, Feldman asserted a clear intention for a "longer relationship with BKFC and Darren Till," signaling the promotion’s desire to retain its high-profile acquisition for the foreseeable future.

The discussion surrounding Till’s potential external opportunities draws parallels with BKFC’s handling of other star fighters. Feldman cited the precedent set by Mike Perry, another former UFC standout who also found considerable success in BKFC. Perry was granted permission to pursue a boxing match against Jake Paul, a bout that generated significant media attention and financial reward for Perry, albeit delaying his return to the bare-knuckle arena. Feldman confirmed that while he generally supports his fighters pursuing lucrative opportunities outside the organization, each situation is assessed on a "case by case basis." This pragmatic approach allows BKFC to maintain goodwill with its talent while strategically protecting its own event scheduling and investment.

Feldman acknowledged that had the rumored Paul vs. Till fight materialized in December, he would have been supportive. However, he emphasized that BKFC’s internal plans for Till ultimately take precedence. The decision to allow or disallow an external fight hinges on the timing and availability of suitable opponents within BKFC. "It comes to do we have something for Darren Till that makes sense? Is the timing going to be right?" Feldman posed, outlining the critical factors. "If we have to lay him off for eight, nine months, it’s only fair to let him go out and make a payday because the momentum’s going to be killed anyway if we don’t have a fight for him. But if we have a fight that I think we’re going to have in the next two weeks to announce, then obviously he’s fighting for BKFC. If we don’t then there is an option for him to possibly to fight a Jake Paul or something like that."

This statement highlights the delicate balance between fighter welfare, momentum, and promotional priorities. Feldman, while recognizing the substantial financial upside of a Paul fight for Till, also expressed confidence in Till’s competitive chances. "I think that Darren Till can hang in there with Jake Paul, has a very good chance of beating him as well so I think it could raise his profile a lot and he has a chance to make a lot of money." However, he firmly reiterated BKFC’s primary interest: "But at the same time, we’re not going to cut our nose off to spite our face here at BKFC. If we have something that works for him, he’s going to do that first." This pragmatic stance ensures that while external opportunities are considered, BKFC’s immediate strategic needs and event schedules will dictate Till’s next move.

Till’s career trajectory in the UFC provides essential context to his current standing. Debuting in the promotion in 2015, Till quickly rose through the welterweight ranks, demonstrating elite striking and a charismatic personality. His impressive run included notable victories over Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone and Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson, culminating in a title shot against then-welterweight champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 228 in September 2018. Despite a valiant effort, Till suffered his first professional loss via submission in the second round. His subsequent move to middleweight, following a knockout loss to Jorge Masvidal, yielded mixed results, including a win over Kelvin Gastelum but losses to Robert Whittaker, Derek Brunson, and Dricus du Plessis. Till departed the UFC with a professional MMA record of 18 wins, 5 losses, and 1 draw, having last competed in December 2022. His transition to BKFC, therefore, represents a reinvention, a chance to rebuild momentum and capitalize on his striking prowess in a new format.

Looking ahead, Feldman teased several exciting possibilities for Till’s future within BKFC. Among the most ambitious is the prospect of hosting Till’s next fight in a soccer stadium in his hometown of Liverpool, England. Such an event would undoubtedly draw a massive crowd, capitalizing on Till’s immense popularity in the region and providing a significant boost to BKFC’s international profile. While not explicitly naming a venue, major stadiums like Anfield (home of Liverpool FC) or Goodison Park (home of Everton FC) would be fitting, if challenging, targets for such an undertaking. Feldman also noted the possibility of Till returning to the United States for future BKFC outings, indicating a flexible approach to his fight locations.

The BKFC President further emphasized that the promotion has "some big ideas for Till’s next opponent." With major tentpole events like BKFC 100 and the next installment of KnuckleMania slated for 2027, it is highly probable that Till, as one of the promotion’s most recognized stars, will play a central role in these milestone cards. These events are crucial for BKFC’s continued growth and provide the platform for its biggest matchups. "We’re going to have some big names for Darren Till in the mix very, very shortly," Feldman promised, indicating that a significant opponent announcement is imminent. He concluded by confirming that one of these potential opponents would be part of an official announcement scheduled to be made "in the next couple weeks." This impending news will provide definitive clarity on Darren Till’s immediate competitive future, either setting him on a path within BKFC or potentially opening the door for another high-stakes crossover spectacle.
