Maranello, Italy – Ferrari is set to debut a significant engine upgrade at its home event, the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, at Monza this weekend, alongside a comprehensive package of aerodynamic and track-specific components. The highly anticipated power unit enhancement, permitted under the sport’s Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) regulations, marks a critical juncture for the Scuderia as it seeks to reignite its championship challenge.
The decision to introduce the new engine comes after the FIA confirmed Ferrari was more than 4% adrift of the ADUO benchmark, a performance metric designed to allow manufacturers with a significant deficit to catch up to the leading power units. This classification grants Ferrari two opportunities for performance upgrades during the current season, and the team has opted to deploy its first such allowance immediately for the high-speed demands of Monza. The ADUO system was established to foster closer competition among engine suppliers, with Red Bull’s power unit currently recognized as the benchmark against which others are measured.
Under the direction of power unit chief Enrico Gualtieri, Ferrari’s engineers have meticulously developed and rigorously tested the upgraded engine. The new 067/7 power unit features a revised combustion chamber and an updated turbocharger, components crucial for both raw power output and efficiency. Following extensive bench tests, the unit has met all required reliability thresholds, paving the way for its competitive debut. Ferrari expects this upgrade to deliver an additional 15 horsepower, a substantial gain in the fiercely competitive world of Formula 1, which the team believes will halve its performance deficit to the Mercedes power unit, widely regarded as the most complete package on the grid. This horsepower injection is also complemented by a new fuel formulation developed in collaboration with long-standing technical partner Shell, further optimizing the engine’s performance characteristics. The strategic aim is to achieve higher peak power and a more refined torque delivery, which will allow for a more efficient and effective distribution of electrical energy throughout a lap.
Beyond the power unit, Ferrari will also roll out a suite of aerodynamic enhancements tailored specifically for the "Temple of Speed." Monza, with its long straights and fast corners, demands a low-drag setup, and Ferrari will introduce a new, more aerodynamically-efficient version of its "Macarena" rear wing, which has not been utilized in previous events this season. This bespoke wing aims to minimize drag while still providing sufficient downforce for the crucial braking zones and chicanes. Furthermore, the team plans to run a refined blown exhaust system, which can be further tweaked during practice sessions should additional drag reduction be required. These aerodynamic adjustments, combined with the power unit upgrade, are designed to give Ferrari the optimal package for its home Grand Prix, a circuit where outright speed is paramount.

The Italian Grand Prix holds immense significance for Ferrari, not only as its home race but also as a crucial opportunity to reverse a recent downturn in performance. The team has failed to secure a podium finish in the last two rounds, a run of results that has seen it outscored by rival McLaren and slip to an 87-point deficit behind Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship standings. The passionate Tifosi, Ferrari’s dedicated fanbase, will be out in full force, and the pressure to deliver a strong result on home soil is considerable. Historically, Monza has presented challenges for the Scuderia in recent years, with the team securing only three victories in the last 19 Italian Grands Prix. This statistical backdrop underscores the urgency and importance of the current upgrade package. A strong performance here is seen as essential to kickstart a late-season title charge and demonstrate the team’s capacity to compete at the sharp end of the grid.
Adding to the strategic complexity of the weekend, Mercedes, one of Ferrari’s primary rivals, will see one of its drivers, Kimi Antonelli, incur a back-of-the-grid penalty. Antonelli will serve this penalty for a complete power unit change, having exceeded his permitted allocation earlier in the season due to reliability issues. This development provides Ferrari with a potential strategic advantage, as one less Mercedes car will be contending for top positions from the outset. However, Antonelli’s teammate, George Russell, is not expected to face a similar penalty at Monza, with reports suggesting that Mercedes might strategically hold off on a full power unit change for Russell until a circuit with similar characteristics, such as Baku, where a grid penalty could be absorbed more effectively due to the track layout. Mercedes’ strategy appears to be focused on ensuring at least one car remains in contention at the front, aiming to blunt Ferrari’s renewed offensive.
In a special tribute, Ferrari will also adorn its cars with a unique livery celebrating the legacy of Michael Schumacher, arguably the most iconic driver in the team’s illustrious history. Schumacher’s unparalleled success with Ferrari, including five consecutive World Drivers’ Championships from 2000 to 2004, forged an indelible bond between the driver, the team, and the Tifosi. This commemorative livery at Monza serves as a powerful reminder of Ferrari’s championship pedigree and its enduring connection to greatness, further amplifying the emotional stakes of the weekend.
The combination of the ADUO-permitted engine upgrade, specialized aerodynamic components, and the strategic landscape created by competitor penalties positions the Italian Grand Prix as a pivotal moment for Ferrari. With the Constructors’ Championship gap to Mercedes widening and McLaren demonstrating strong recent form, the Scuderia understands the imperative to deliver.
