His work, far from the glare of trackside cameras, is instrumental in refining the FW48 chassis and laying groundwork for future iterations, as the historic British outfit continues its journey to climb the constructor standings. Martins’ insights provide a unique perspective into the high-tech world of F1 simulation and the career aspirations of a driver navigating the complex pathways of elite motorsport.
Martins acknowledges that his influence on the Williams F1 car is not always direct, given the multitude of departments and personnel involved in modern Formula 1. However, he emphasizes the profound indirect impact he facilitates. "I can have an impact on the car, but is it direct? Not necessarily, I’d say, because there are many people in the team, many departments, many things to improve, to analyse – so ‘direct’, I’d say no," Martins explained in a recent interview. "However, taking part in development, yes – be it mainly on the simulator, testing energy management on the upcoming track before every weekend, preparing [for] Alex’s and Carlos’ arrivals so that they can work on other things that may be more important to them."
This crucial preparatory work means that when the primary race drivers, Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant, arrive at a Grand Prix weekend, a significant portion of the initial setup and energy management strategies has already been fine-tuned. This allows them to focus immediately on critical aspects like outright pace and long-run performance, optimizing their limited free practice time. Martins’ role involves replicating track conditions, evaluating various car setups, and providing crucial data and feedback that inform engineering decisions. While Martins cites a close relationship with Alex Albon and "Carlos Sainz" for feedback, this highlights a broader engagement with driver perspectives across the F1 paddock, leveraging every available insight to enhance the Williams car.
The distinction between simulator work and actual on-track driving is a persistent challenge for simulator drivers. Martins readily admits the difficulty of not having driven the current F1 car in real life. "It does," he states when asked if it makes things trickier. "But we know how difficult it is to get actual mileage in the car – you don’t get many FP1 opportunities, there isn’t much time, these aren’t easy things to get as a driver." Despite this, Martins asserts that his extensive experience from junior categories and his diligent analysis of real-world track data provide him with sufficient feedback to contribute effectively. "I still have enough feedback and experience to look at and listen to what happens on the car out on track; reproduce it on the simulator, feel it, understand it and know where to go from there," he added. He recognizes the immense value a real-life driving opportunity would bring: "Of course, if tomorrow I were to have an opportunity to drive it, it would be invaluable for the whole development of the simulator, of the car, of the correlation – for pretty much everyone actually, all departments."

For aspiring F1 drivers, securing Free Practice 1 (FP1) sessions or Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) days is paramount for gaining real-world F1 experience and demonstrating their capabilities. Martins has participated in TPC days, including one earlier this year at Silverstone, though not with the current FW48 chassis. He has also had a single FP1 outing at last year’s Spanish Grand Prix. However, he remains pragmatic about future opportunities. "For now, there are no FP1 plans," Martins confirmed. "For now, there’s nothing planned for me, but again, things can change in F1; you must not rush or be desperate, you just need to do the job when needed, be professional, give the right feedback, have the right relationship, then maybe they’ll give me the car sometime this year." This patient and professional approach is characteristic of many young drivers seeking to break into the sport’s highest echelon.
Beyond his direct contributions to the Williams F1 team’s current campaign, Martins is also playing a significant role in developing a specialized simulator for the Williams Racing Driver Academy. This initiative aims to nurture the next generation of talent by providing them with a highly realistic virtual environment. Martins explains the inherent similarities and crucial differences between the two simulator projects: "It’s actually quite similar, because in the simulator I’m doing for this year’s FW48, we try and replicate the car’s movement, its problems, its strengths and weaknesses, and its feeling, in order to develop it." For the academy simulator, the focus shifts to accurately reproducing the characteristics of feeder series cars, such as those in Formula 2 and Formula 3, including their specific Pirelli tyre models, engines, and overall handling. "It’s just up to me to bring my F2/F3 experience regarding Pirelli tyres, the car, the engines, how it went, how they behaved – just to replicate them and reproduce them," Martins elaborated.
The ability to run these two distinct simulators simultaneously at the Williams factory in Grove underscores the team’s dual commitment to immediate F1 performance and long-term talent development. "Yes. Simultaneously, not on the weekend, but for instance at the factory on a Tuesday, there’s the simulator that works on the FW48’s development year-round, and a few metres away, a simulator that runs to help young drivers," Martins explained. He emphasized that while the technology may be similar, their objectives are entirely separate. "One is for F1 and the other is for the academy’s young drivers, so these are two very different things, but yes, they can run at the same time."
Williams Racing, under Team Principal James Vowles, is in a significant rebuilding phase, with substantial resources being dedicated to future car development. Alex Albon has previously hinted at the team’s focus shifting towards the FW49, the chassis for the upcoming season. Martins confirms his involvement, though his primary focus remains on the current car. "Yes, but we’re a sizeable pool of drivers, so we have different tasks and targets. As of now, I think I’m more dedicated to current development with the FW48, so that’s race support," Martins stated. "For instance, yesterday [on Thursday ahead of the Belgian GP] I was still on the simulator to prepare this weekend and have the last adjustments on energy management, so I’m focusing more on this." However, he has also had opportunities to contribute to future projects. "But a few times this year I’ve been able to test what’s coming in the next few years and how they behave relative to this year’s car, as well as the avenues to follow." This dual focus highlights the multifaceted nature of an F1 simulator driver’s role within a large, evolving team structure.
Martins’ role at Williams is not merely a stepping stone for F1, but a strategic move to broaden his career prospects across elite motorsport. While F1 remains a dream, he is also keenly aware of opportunities in other top-tier categories. "I’m not shying away from the fact I still think of F1, but I think of F1 as much as WEC or Formula E for instance, because these are in my opinion the three most important and coveted categories in motorsport for the best drivers in the world," Martins articulated. His current position at Williams offers invaluable learning experiences, particularly concerning the electrical and hybrid systems prevalent in modern F1 cars. This knowledge is directly transferable to series like Formula E, which relies entirely on electric powertrains, and the Hypercar class in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), which features complex hybrid systems.
His existing connections, such as with Alpine (with whom he has competed in junior categories and for whom he is an academy driver), further enhance his versatility. "The electrical side of F1 can give me nice things if I move to FE later in my career, so there are many connections between all these categories. Hypercar systems are very close to F1 systems, so I can also bring things that I learn here into Hypercar with Alpine," Martins explained. This holistic approach to his career ensures that every experience, particularly his demanding work at Williams, contributes to his overall development as a professional racing driver, keeping multiple doors open for a successful future in motorsport. His dedication to learning and his adaptability position him as a valuable asset, whether he eventually finds a seat in Formula 1 or excels in other premier racing disciplines.
