Ferrari’s SF-26 Performance in Hungarian Grand Prix Practice Validates Mercedes’ Pre-Race Apprehensions, George Russell Confirms.

The opening day of Formula 1 track action at the Hungaroring for the Hungarian Grand Prix saw Scuderia Ferrari assert a dominant early pace, confirming concerns previously voiced by rival teams, particularly Mercedes. Despite attempts by Ferrari drivers to temper expectations, the SF-26 chassis demonstrated its widely acknowledged superiority through slower corner sections, culminating in a strong showing across both Friday practice sessions. Charles Leclerc set the fastest time in the initial Free Practice 1 (FP1) session, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton then led a commanding Ferrari 1-2 in Free Practice 2 (FP2), underscoring the team’s strong start to the weekend.

In stark contrast, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team experienced a challenging day, with both their drivers reporting significant confidence-sapping balance issues and a pervasive lack of overall grip. This performance disparity led to a frank assessment from Mercedes driver George Russell, who articulated the team’s pre-race anxieties regarding Ferrari’s potential.

"It was quite a strange day out there, I think, for everybody," Russell commented after practice. "Budapest is an amazing track to drive but they’ve resurfaced half of the track, super bumpy, a lot of it is breaking up around the last couple of corners, which is making it quite strange to drive on. Our single lap [pace] didn’t look great, the long run looked more competitive. But what we essentially feared with Ferrari seemed to be the case." Russell’s remarks highlight the dual challenge faced by Mercedes: internal car issues exacerbated by tricky track conditions.

The Hungaroring, a circuit often likened to a go-kart track due to its tight and twisty nature, demands high downforce and excellent mechanical grip, particularly through its numerous slow and medium-speed corners. The Ferrari SF-26 has, throughout the current season, built a formidable reputation for excelling in these exact conditions. This characteristic led many to consider it the runaway favourite for the Monaco Grand Prix earlier in the year, another high-downforce, low-speed circuit. While Ferrari did not ultimately convert that favouritism into a victory in Monaco, the car’s inherent strengths in similar profiles remained undisputed. Interestingly, Ferrari drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, have subsequently secured victories at circuits generally considered less favourable to the SF-26’s technical package – Hamilton winning in Barcelona and Leclerc at Silverstone. This suggested an evolving understanding and development of the car, broadening its performance window. However, the unique demands of the Hungaroring appear to have brought Ferrari’s core strengths back to the forefront.

The track itself presented an additional layer of complexity for all teams. Traditionally, the Hungaroring is one of the less frequently used circuits on the F1 calendar, meaning its surface tends to be ‘green’ and dusty at the beginning of a race weekend. This characteristic leads to rapid track evolution as rubber is laid down and grip levels improve significantly through practice sessions. Adding to this challenge, parts of the circuit have been recently relaid, but drivers reported an unexpected increase in bumpiness, with sections around the final corners reportedly breaking up.

Bumpiness, while a relative term in the context of FIA Grade One status tracks – all of which must meet stringent safety and quality standards – can have a disproportionate impact on modern Formula 1 cars. These machines operate with extremely stiff suspensions and minimal suspension travel, designed to maximize the ground effect aerodynamics. Even minor surface inconsistencies can disrupt the delicate aerodynamic balance, causing the car to ‘porpoise’ or lose critical downforce, which translates directly into a loss of grip and confidence for the drivers. The combination of a ‘green’ surface and unexpected bumps makes the task of dialling in a car’s setup particularly arduous. Furthermore, the latest generation of F1 cars are highly sensitive to sliding and inconsistency from lap to lap, with the sophisticated power unit control software often punishing such deviations.

Setting up an F1 car at the Hungaroring requires a delicate and intricate balance. The circuit’s configuration, characterized by a series of corners demanding high traction on exit, typically makes the rear axle the limiting factor for tyre degradation and overall pace. Drivers and engineers must therefore strive to protect the rear tyres from overheating and excessive wear. However, a common strategy to achieve this is to dial in a degree of understeer into the car’s setup, which places less load on the rear tyres during cornering. This approach, while beneficial for tyre longevity, often comes at the cost of entry speed into corners, creating a critical trade-off that teams must navigate to optimize both single-lap qualifying pace and long-run race performance.

In FP2, Russell’s fastest lap was recorded at 0.933 seconds off Hamilton’s benchmark time, a significant margin that underscores Mercedes’ struggles with raw pace. Adding to Mercedes’ woes, rookie driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, participating in his first official F1 practice session, ended FP2 1.964 seconds off the pace, placing him 13th overall. However, Antonelli’s session was far from representative. He was forced to abort his initial flying lap due to a red flag triggered by a crash involving Franco Colapinto, and his subsequent attempt was compromised by a lock-up, preventing him from extracting the full potential of the car or demonstrating his true pace. This lost track time is particularly crucial for a young driver needing to familiarize himself with the car and circuit.

Despite the challenging practice sessions, Mercedes remained outwardly emphatic about their prospects for qualifying and the race. Bradley Lord, the deputy team principal, conveyed a message of resilience and optimism. "We’ve been competitive at every type of circuit this year," Lord stated. "I know there’s a certain narrative that certain circuits favour us and others will favour them, we’ve seen generally other teams swing back and forth a reasonable amount. But I think we’ve been pretty consistently fighting up there and at the front and able to compete for pole at every race. So that has to be our target for tomorrow as well." Lord’s comments reflect a common team stance, aiming to project confidence and maintain morale, even in the face of initial difficulties. Mercedes’ recent form has indeed shown flashes of brilliance, including several pole positions and strong race performances, suggesting their W15 chassis can be a formidable contender when properly optimized. However, converting this potential into actual performance at the Hungaroring will require significant adjustments overnight.

The contrasting fortunes of Ferrari and Mercedes on Friday set the stage for a compelling qualifying session. While Ferrari appears to have found a sweet spot for their SF-26 on the demanding Hungarian circuit, Mercedes faces the daunting task of overcoming significant balance and grip issues to challenge for pole position. The evolving track conditions and the ever-present challenge of managing tyre performance will further add to the intrigue as teams fine-tune their strategies for the remainder of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.
