Speaking to MMA Fighting following the event, Alderete offered his perspective, asserting that his actions were a direct response to a sustained campaign of pre-fight disrespect from Smotherman. "He talked trash about me the entire build, including in an interview that dropped in the arena prior to the fight that I hadn’t seen before," Alderete explained. The young fighter elaborated on a specific exchange during face-offs where Smotherman claimed ignorance of Alderete’s identity and dismissed the "hype" surrounding him.
"I told him at face-offs, because he said he doesn’t know nothing about me, and he doesn’t understand the hype, so after I knew he was asleep for like four seconds already, I had him asleep in my hands for like five, six seconds, so I’m fulfilling the energy," Alderete recounted. "I get up and then I hop on a cage, whatever, hop off, and he’s up and causing all this sh*t. And so I’m like, ‘You know what, I’m just going to go add a cherry on top.’ So I ran up and I told him, ‘I told you [you were] going to remember the name today,’ and I mean he just crashed out."

The 19-year-old further detailed the escalating chaos outside the cage, noting the crowd’s visceral reaction. "They dragged him out of the cage. He runs back in, tries to sneak attack me, the funniest sht of all-time. Like, I’m just watching this dude be carried out from head to toe. I look outside the cage, I see ice cups getting thrown in the air at this dude, beers getting thrown. I’m like, ‘Oh my God, it is gonna be a riot in this motherfcker.’"
Smotherman, a veteran of the UFC known for his tenacious fighting style, later countered Alderete’s narrative, claiming he was subjected to an unprecedented seven fouls during the bout. These alleged infractions included five low blows, a headbutt, and an eye poke. Notably, two of the claimed low blows were deemed sufficiently egregious by the referee to warrant a point deduction against Alderete in the second round, just prior to the decisive finish. "He felt the pressure of the fight," Alderete stated, acknowledging only the two clear low blows for which he was penalized. "He knew I was coming in hungry as fck, about to eat his fcking face off, and he didn’t want to quit, but he was buying himself some time I think, maybe either trying to throw me off my rhythm or fcking get the ref to disqualify me so he didn’t look like a btch and quit, you know what I mean? And that’s OK cause I didn’t finish him with a nut shot. I mean, I choked him to sleep, you know what I mean? And then I kicked his head off his shoulders. So, I’m not, I’m not tripping on this."
The controversial post-fight events quickly went viral on social media platforms, sparking a polarized discussion among fans and pundits. Many criticized Alderete’s perceived lack of sportsmanship, deeming his celebration unprofessional and excessive. However, Alderete remains unrepentant, asserting that his actions were provoked by unseen incidents during the fight’s breaks.
"Well, let me put it like this, OK, because this needs to be cleared up anyways for everybody that watched the fight," Alderete explained. "I did that because I look outside the cage on this break [after a low blow], you’re just walking back and forth looking around. Bro, these dudes and all his family and fans, friends, whatever on that side, they’re standing up on the chair, flicking me off. One dude’s raising his stuff at me, right? He’s doing a crotch grab at me… and I’m like, you know what? Fck ya’ll. So I give a lot of birds and then I crotch grab them and oh now I’m the bad guy. But it’s just like your boy did. He did all that hot talking before the fight, but he couldn’t walk it in the fight. I mean, don’t do all that talking out there if you ain’t going to be able to take back what you’re giving out. Don’t do it, you know what I mean? So at the end of the day, I have no regrets on that sht, if you want to be honest. But I mean, sorry if you got your feelings hurt, I’m going to just give you what you want to hear. Sorry. You win. There you go."
The incident even drew the attention of high-profile figures in the sport, including UFC bantamweight Adrian Yañez, a respected veteran from the Houston regional scene with a professional record of 16-4. Yañez publicly condemned Alderete’s behavior on social media, tweeting, "Jay was being disrespectful to Cameron’s mom. Flicking her off and telling her fck you. Fck that disrespectful sh*t."
Alderete swiftly addressed Yañez’s accusation, vehemently denying any disrespect towards Smotherman’s mother. "I’m like, bro, who even is this? Who even is his mom?" Alderete questioned. "Never seen his mom, never talked to his mom, don’t even know who she is, what she looks like. And I’m being disrespectful to her? Bro, didn’t say a word about you, your team, your family, nothing – before, during, or after the fight."
Further complicating the narrative, Alderete revealed that Smotherman had contacted him directly via social media in the days following the fight, sending aggressive voice messages. "He’s like, ‘You a btch, and I’ll beat the fck out of you.’ And I’m like, ‘Dog, I just put you to sleep.’ He’s like, ‘If you don’t think it was a fluke, then line it back up.’" Alderete dismissed the challenge, suggesting Smotherman’s post-fight conduct had been less than professional. "Bro, if I give you the opportunity to fight me again, what are you going to go do? Cry to your mommy? Have your mommy f*cking calling the promoter, whining? Is that what you’re going to do? Because that’s what you did this time. So it’s like, bro, suck it up. Go do something with your life. Get a job. If you want to train, hit me up. Whatever you wanna do, bro, but I’m not going to sit here and beef with you over some regional ass win. I’m trying to get to the UFC. You was just a stepping stone."
Regarding a potential rematch with Smotherman, Alderete indicated he would only consider it if Smotherman were to somehow return to the UFC. For now, the prodigious 19-year-old is squarely focused on advancing his career, with his sights set on securing a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship or earning a spot on Dana White’s Contender Series.
In a surprising turn, Alderete also used the opportunity to address Yañez’s public criticism, issuing an unexpected call-out. "I would love to chin that dude as my UFC debut," Alderete declared. "I fcking grew up watching him too. Like these guys, I literally looked up to growing up in the Houston MMA community, because they were like the big names in the Houston MMA community when I was growing up. And now I’m like, bro, y’all some ass clowns.
