However, the iconic Memorial Day classic faces the persistent threat of inclement weather, casting a shadow over the festivities alongside the recent, profound loss of a sport legend.
Defending champion Ross Chastain of Trackhouse Racing, who orchestrated a remarkable comeback from the rear of the field to claim victory in last year’s 600-mile marathon, is back to defend his title. Chastain, alongside teammate Connor Zilisch, is embarking on an ambitious endeavor to complete a staggering 1,101 miles of racing across all three national NASCAR divisions at Charlotte. Their efforts, however, may be significantly hampered by a forecast predicting rain throughout the weekend.
Adding to the competitive narrative, Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing arrives at Charlotte with significant momentum, fresh off his victory in the $1 million All-Star Race at Dover. Despite Hamlin’s recent success, the current championship leader in the NASCAR Cup Series is Tyler Reddick, pilot of the No. 45 Toyota for 23XI Racing. While the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race was ultimately completed, practice and qualifying for the NASCAR Cup Series were also canceled due to rain, forcing NASCAR officials to set the starting lineup based on the previous race’s results. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. of JTG Daugherty Racing managed to top the lone Cup Series practice session before qualifying was ultimately scrapped.

Austin Hill will pilot the No. 33 RCR Chevrolet in place of the No. 8 car for this weekend’s events.

The entry list for the 2024 Coca-Cola 600 features 36 chartered entries, signifying the full-time teams in the NASCAR Cup Series. Additionally, three open entries will compete for a starting spot. These include the No. 66 Garage 66 Ford driven by Timmy Hill, the No. 67 23XI Racing Toyota piloted by Corey Heim, and the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet, which will see Katherine Legge behind the wheel.
