Katherine Legge to Chase Motorsport History with Surprise Indy 500 and Coke 600 Double

In a dramatic late-night development that sent ripples through the motorsport community, British racer Katherine Legge has secured a last-minute agreement to attempt the prestigious Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day next week, a feat known as "The Double." The news, independently confirmed by Motorsport.com following the initial Indy 500 practice session, marks a significant moment for the 45-year-old driver and for the sport.

Legge is already slated to compete in her fifth Indianapolis 500, piloting the No. 11 HMD Motorsports/AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet in the 110th running of the iconic event. The addition of the 67th Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on the same day, Sunday, May 24th, will place her in rarefied air. Should she successfully complete both grueling races, Legge would become only the sixth driver in history to achieve this demanding double. Furthermore, she will be the first woman and the first non-American to undertake such an attempt, and at 45, she will also be the oldest competitor to do so.

"Very few drivers ever get the opportunity to attempt ‘The Double,’ and I do not take that opportunity lightly," Legge stated in a press release. "This challenge is about pushing through perceived limits, betting on yourself, taking risks and trying to do something unique. I am so incredibly grateful to e.l.f. Cosmetics for believing in what this moment represents and for building a community around it."

The financial backing for this ambitious endeavor comes from e.l.f. Cosmetics, a brand that is also supporting Legge’s Indy 500 campaign. This partnership underscores a growing trend of non-traditional sponsors engaging with high-profile motorsport events.

Legge’s recent involvement in the NASCAR Cup Series has been building towards this potential opportunity. She made her eighth career Cup Series start just last weekend at Watkins Glen International, where she piloted the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet. She is scheduled to drive the same car at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600. Her most recent Cup Series outing at Watkins Glen saw her finish 24th, a respectable performance in a highly competitive field.

The Indianapolis 500, a cornerstone of the NTT IndyCar Series, is scheduled to begin Sunday afternoon at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Coca-Cola 600, the longest race on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar, takes place later that evening at Charlotte Motor Speedway, approximately 100 miles south of Indianapolis. The logistical and physical demands of competing in both races on the same day are immense, requiring seamless transitions between circuits, teams, and driving disciplines.

The elite club of drivers who have attempted The Double includes some of the most celebrated names in motorsport. The most recent to try was two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson, who made the attempt in 2019. Prior to Larson, Robby Gordon, John Andretti, Kurt Busch, and Tony Stewart successfully completed the challenge. Stewart remains the only driver to have completed every lap of both races in a single day, achieving this remarkable feat in 2001. Davy Jones also attempted the Double in 1995 but was unable to qualify for the Coca-Cola 600.

Legge’s participation in the Indy 500 is secured as she is locked into the field, meaning she does not face the pressure of qualifying. However, her entry into the Coca-Cola 600 is still contingent on securing a spot in the 40-car field. The official entry list for the NASCAR Cup Series race will be released next Monday, and it will then be confirmed whether Legge will need to qualify or if she has received a conditional entry.

This last-minute arrangement highlights the unpredictable nature of motorsport sponsorship and driver recruitment. Legge had previously expressed her desire to attempt The Double, but had indicated that such an endeavor would be heavily dependent on securing the necessary sponsorship and support from e.l.f. Cosmetics. The fact that this deal has materialized within two weeks of race day speaks to the rapid pace at which these critical agreements can be finalized.

Legge’s career in open-wheel racing includes significant success. Her best finish in the Indianapolis 500 to date was 22nd in 2012. While her NASCAR Cup Series career is relatively nascent, having debuted just over a year ago, she has gained valuable oval racing experience in the series. Notably, she achieved a career-best 17th-place finish in the 2025 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a strong result for the Live Fast Motorsports team in a non-drafting race. Although this would be her debut in the Coca-Cola 600, she did compete in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May of last year, gaining familiarity with the track’s nuances.

The physical and mental fortitude required for The Double cannot be overstated. Drivers must contend with the high speeds and aerodynamic challenges of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.5-mile oval, followed by the demanding 1.5-mile oval of Charlotte Motor Speedway, known for its banking and tire wear. The shift in car dynamics, racing strategies, and the sheer endurance required to pilot a race car for over 1,100 miles in a single day presents one of motorsport’s ultimate tests.

The convergence of Legge’s IndyCar and NASCAR aspirations on the same day is a testament to her ambition and the growing support for her racing career. The involvement of e.l.f. Cosmetics signals a broader appeal and marketability for Legge’s journey, potentially inspiring a new generation of fans and participants. As the motorsport world anticipates next weekend’s historic events, all eyes will be on Katherine Legge as she aims to etch her name into the annals of racing history.
