Shane van Gisbergen Proves His Prowess with Dominant Watkins Glen Victory

Shane van Gisbergen, the highly acclaimed Supercars champion, has once again asserted his dominance on the NASCAR Cup Series circuit, delivering a masterful performance to claim victory at Watkins Glen International. Despite facing a challenging strategic predicament following a late-race caution, van Gisbergen, driving the No. 91 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing, executed a flawless final stint to secure a commanding win.

The decisive moment of the race came with just 39 laps remaining when a caution flag waved. This presented a critical decision for van Gisbergen and his crew chief, Stephen Doran. The team faced a stark choice: remain on track and risk running out of fuel before the finish, or pit for fresh tires and a full tank, thereby surrendering a significant track position lead. Opting for the latter, van Gisbergen found himself needing to overcome a deficit of nearly 30 seconds with only 18 laps to complete on the demanding 2.45-mile road course.

What followed was a display of sheer driving talent and strategic acumen. Van Gisbergen systematically dismantled the lead, demonstrating an uncanny ability to conserve his tires while maximizing his pace. He ultimately crossed the finish line more than seven seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Michael McDowell, who had started the race alongside him on the front row.

"I think it was 27 seconds (in) 20 laps, so I was a bit worried," van Gisbergen admitted post-race, reflecting on the daunting challenge. "Then their tires weren’t going to get any newer, I guess. Once they fell off into the .75s (and) .76s, it was a pretty cool feeling."

While competitors like Ty Gibbs and Connor Zilisch, who opted to stay out during the caution, battled each other for the lead while managing fuel and tire wear, van Gisbergen was tasked with his specialty: unleashing blistering pace on a road course. Crew chief Stephen Doran expressed no doubt in his driver’s capabilities. "He’s made it pretty clear, especially at these tracks, he likes to be on offense, so we put him there," Doran stated.

From Doran’s perspective, the decision to pit was straightforward. "It really wasn’t that tough," he commented. "Our guys were — our engineers were telling me we’re three laps short. And to save three laps at a road course was not something I was super interested in. I didn’t want to get beat by somebody who was aggressive and chased us down." This strategy proved prescient, as McDowell, despite a strong run to second, never had an opportunity to reel in the flying No. 91.

McDowell, who finished runner-up, acknowledged van Gisbergen’s exceptional skill, particularly in navigating the challenging "bus stop" chicane. "He just gets through the bus stop better than everyone else, and we saw that in qualifying, and when I was behind him, I could see it," McDowell observed. "After qualifying, I just thought, man I need to get in deeper, so I followed him in there and my car didn’t recover over the curbs as well as his." He added, "So we just have to work on our package a little bit. He comes off that second curb with so much control and so much momentum. I feel like we have some work to do there but there were sections of the track we were better too, so we just have to keep working on it."

McDowell elaborated on the difficulty of competing against the New Zealander, stating, "I’ve said this before, I don’t feel like he’s unbeatable but he is really hard to beat because he executes so well and manages his tires so well. And at a place like this, where this so much (tire) falloff, he’s a hard guy to beat."

Van Gisbergen’s victory at Watkins Glen marks another significant achievement in his burgeoning NASCAR Cup Series career. Having transitioned from a decorated Supercars career, where he secured three championships and numerous wins, his adaptability and talent have been immediately evident. Despite extensive data analysis and study by NASCAR teams over the past two years, replicating van Gisbergen’s unique approach to road racing has proven elusive.

Reflecting on his performance, van Gisbergen considered it one of his finest drives. "I feel like this is one of the best races I’ve driven," he said. "You know, not many mistakes, a pretty cool feeling. My mates were all giving me shit yesterday about how I’m getting too old for my birthday. You know, I don’t feel old. I felt like that’s the best I’ve driven. It was pretty cool."

The 37-year-old driver credited a significant team effort for the success. "I think just everything was good," van Gisbergen explained. "My car was not very good in practice yesterday. Then they changed for qualifying, and it was a big step in the right direction. Then today it was even better. Then just everything was good. My restarts were good. My pit stops. The guys did a great job. Then the strategy as well. Like, it was a great team victory."

He further emphasized the significance of the win, particularly given the team’s journey this season. "Yeah, as I always say, you see how much it means to everyone, and it hasn’t been the easiest year for us. Pretty cool to get that result. It means a lot just to — you know, there is pressure or expectation from everyone on these days, but when you ignore that and just execute, it’s a really cool feeling."

The win at Watkins Glen solidifies Shane van Gisbergen’s status as a formidable contender in the NASCAR Cup Series, particularly on road courses. His ability to overcome adversity and execute under pressure has not only thrilled fans but also underscored the impact of international talent on American stock car racing. As the season progresses, van Gisbergen and Trackhouse Racing will undoubtedly be ones to watch.

The NASCAR Cup Series will next head to Darlington Raceway for the Cook Out Southern 500 on Sunday, September 1st, marking the start of the playoffs.
