Katherine Legge Eyes Historic Indy 500 and Coke 600 Double as NASCAR Stint Continues

Katherine Legge is set to make her eighth career NASCAR Cup Series start and her first of the 2026 season this Sunday at Watkins Glen International. Driving the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet, adorned with sponsorship from e.l.f. Cosmetics, Legge will contest the road course event before embarking on a familiar challenge in open-wheel racing.

Immediately following the checkered flag at the Glen, Legge will transition to Indianapolis, where practice for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500 will be underway. She is slated to pilot the No. 11 Chevrolet, a collaborative effort between HMD Motorsports and A.J. Foyt Enterprises, marking her fifth appearance in the prestigious IndyCar crown jewel event. e.l.f. Cosmetics will once again be a key partner for her Indy 500 campaign.

Legge’s dual commitments have inevitably sparked speculation about the possibility of her attempting the demanding Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 double-header in the future. While the prospect of competing in both iconic races on the same day is a significant undertaking, Legge has expressed her keen interest in the challenge. However, the realization of such a feat hinges critically on securing the necessary sponsorship.

"Yes. I think it would be awesome," Legge stated when asked about the potential of a double. "Right? I think a lot of people have mentioned that, and I think it would definitely be something that e.l.f. would be willing to do, because they want to do all the groundbreaking, really cool stuff there. I hope that I get the opportunity one day down the road."

The Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 double, often referred to as the "Double Duty," requires drivers to compete in the Indy 500 on Sunday afternoon before traveling to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600, which begins that evening. This demanding schedule covers a total of 1,100 miles and demands exceptional physical and mental stamina, as well as meticulous logistical planning.

Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson is the most recent driver to attempt this arduous feat, participating in both races in 2023. Larson was the fifth driver in history to attempt the Double on the same day. However, Tony Stewart remains the sole driver to have successfully completed all 1,100 miles and 600 laps of both events in a single day, achieving this remarkable accomplishment in 2001.

Legge, a seasoned competitor with extensive experience in various motorsport disciplines, including significant endurance racing, expressed confidence in her ability to handle the rigors of the Double should the opportunity arise. At 45 years old, if she were to undertake this challenge, she would become the oldest driver to have ever attempted the rare accomplishment.

"I think I’m in a unique position where I’ve done a lot of miles in whatever I’ve driven," Legge explained. "You know, I was telling somebody the other day that it was here, like, 2017 or something, where I did a triple stint in the car, and I got out, and I literally fell over the pit wall because it was 100 degrees outside. And they gave me IVs, and I’m like, I don’t know if I can get back in from my next stint. And they gave me two IVs, and, literally, 10 minutes later, I was like, okay, let’s go. I think my endurance is pretty strong. We train all year. A lot of us train over here to be able to keep our heart rate at the 160 to 180 range, which is what it is in the car for multiple hours at a time. It becomes more of a challenge for not eating for that long for me because I’m always hungry. But I think I’ve done so much racing over longer periods of time that I hope that wouldn’t be an issue. I’m as fit as I’ve ever been. Probably fitter. I don’t know. Hopefully one day, I’ll get the opportunity to put that to the test."

Legge’s current focus is on her NASCAR Cup Series endeavors. Reflecting on her experience in the series, she shared her positive impressions of the discipline.

"I think I didn’t realize how awesome NASCAR would be," Legge commented. "Obviously, I knew how difficult it would be because they’re some of the best drivers in the world. I still have a love for IndyCar and the Indy 500, especially. So I hope that I still get to do the Indy 500, but as far as the other races, I kind of pushing really hard to do more in the NASCAR space just because I think that I could be good at it, if I was given the opportunity to do it, week in, week out, or at least more often. And I want to get to the point where I feel like, okay, that’s as good as I can get, whether that’s P1, P10, P20, whatever that might be. I want to see where that leads me."

Legge’s most notable result in the NASCAR Cup Series to date was at the 2025 Brickyard 400 held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. There, she secured a 17th-place finish, which represented Live Fast Motorsports’ best-ever result on a non-drafting track. This performance underscores her potential in stock car racing.

The British driver believes she has more to demonstrate in a NASCAR stock car. "I feel like I haven’t shown my potential yet, and I want to, and I want to make a success in stock cars," Legge asserted. "And so, as long as I get the opportunity, I mean, I work hard for it, too, but as long as the opportunity is there, of course, I’m going to take it, because I have a love for the sport more than anything I want to drive anything that I can get my hands on. And the cooler, the better, and there’s nothing cooler than NASCAR Cup, right?"

The upcoming NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International is scheduled for Sunday, with Legge starting from 38th position. Following this event, her attention will fully shift to preparing for the Indianapolis 500, further highlighting her versatility and ambition across different racing disciplines. The ongoing pursuit of the Indy 500/Coke 600 Double remains a significant aspiration for Legge, contingent upon the crucial element of sponsorship to facilitate this demanding yet potentially historic achievement.
