No. 1 seed Sloane Stephens and wildcard Elina Svitolina have progressed to the l’Open 35 de Saint-Malo semifinals, where they will meet each other. Svitolina defeated Leolia Jeanjean 6-3, 6-1 in just 64 minutes, while Stephens advanced 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 against Jessika Ponchet. This sets up a meeting between the two former Top 3 players in a WTA 125 tournament in northern France. The last time Svitolina and Stephens played each other was in the 2018 WTA Finals Singapore final, which Svitolina won 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
In the second semifinal, unseeded players Greet Minnen and Katie Volynets will face each other. Minnen defeated No. 8 seed Emma Navarro 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Volynets took out No. 7 seed Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-3. Both players will be bidding to reach their first WTA 125 final.
Svitolina, currently ranked No. 1088, returned from maternity leave last month in Charleston and has been in her fifth tournament since. This is her first consecutive win since her comeback. Stephens also took a wild card into the event after losing to Jaqueline Cristian in the first round of Madrid and is currently at a career high of No. 124.
