Hendrick Motorsports has announced that Justin Allgaier, the reigning NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion, will pilot the No. 48 Chevrolet at this weekend’s Cup Series event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This change comes as Alex Bowman continues to manage lingering symptoms of vertigo, which forced him to withdraw from the race at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) mid-event. Myatt Snider completed the COTA race for Bowman, and Anthony Alfredo, a Hendrick Motorsports sim driver, took the reins at Phoenix Raceway, finishing 33rd after being involved in a restart incident.
Team General Manager Jeff Andrews confirmed that Bowman began experiencing vertigo symptoms during the COTA race. "Alex continues to work closely with doctors toward being medically cleared, but he’s still experiencing some lingering symptoms," Andrews stated. "He’s put a lot into the recovery process, and we will continue to support him every step of the way. Our priority remains making sure Alex is fully ready before returning to the race car."
Allgaier, a full-time competitor for JR Motorsports in the O’Reilly Series, is fresh off his 29th career series victory last weekend. With over 500 starts in NASCAR’s secondary division, Allgaier brings a wealth of experience, coupled with a history of appearances in the Cup Series. He has accumulated 84 Cup starts between 2013 and 2024. His most recent Cup outing was in the Daytona 500 with JR Motorsports, where he was challenging for the lead before an incident. In his Cup career, Allgaier has secured two top-ten finishes, with a personal best of eighth. He previously subbed for Hendrick Motorsports in 2024, finishing 13th in the Coca-Cola 600 while Kyle Larson was competing in the Indianapolis 500.
While Allgaier has not raced a Cup car at the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway since 2015, he did secure a victory in the O’Reilly Series at the intermediate track last year, demonstrating his proficiency on this track configuration.
