NTSB Outlines Lengthy Investigation into Fatal Greg Biffle Plane Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has commenced its comprehensive investigation into the tragic aviation incident that claimed the lives of former NASCAR Cup Series star Greg Biffle, his family, and three other individuals on Thursday morning at Statesville Regional Airport. While an initial preliminary report is expected within 30 days, the complete analysis and final report are anticipated to take between 12 to 18 months to publish, reflecting the meticulous and in-depth nature of the NTSB’s investigative process.

During a press conference held on Friday afternoon, NTSB Member Michael Graham, accompanied by Investigator-In-Charge Dan Baker, provided an overview of the investigative roadmap. Graham detailed that the initial phase of the inquiry will focus on gathering crucial evidence, including conducting interviews with potential witnesses and collecting all relevant multimedia documentation pertaining to the crash.

The aircraft, a Cessna 550 owned by Greg Biffle, reportedly went down at 10:15 a.m. local time, approximately ten minutes after departing Statesville Regional Airport. The crash occurred on the approach end of Runway 28. Tragically, all seven occupants of the aircraft perished in the accident. Among the deceased were Greg Biffle; his wife, Cristina Grossu Biffle; his daughter, Emma, from his first marriage to Nicole Lunders; and his son, Ryder. Also on board were Craig Wadsworth, a long-time associate of Biffle within the NASCAR community, and Dennis and Jack Dutton.

The impact of the crash resulted in an extensive debris field spanning approximately 1800 feet. The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) from the aircraft has been transported to Washington D.C. for detailed analysis, a critical component in understanding the final moments before the incident.

"It’s fairly long so it’s scattered wide and out so it’s going to take some time to document all that," Graham stated regarding the debris field. "We were unable to get our drone launched today with the high winds but we want to get that digitally documented with the drone tomorrow so hopefully we can get a better idea of how wide and how much debris is out there."

A significant point of inquiry for the NTSB is the identity of the pilot at the controls during the flight. Graham confirmed that while three of the occupants held pilot’s licenses, the NTSB has not yet been able to definitively determine who was piloting the aircraft at the time of the crash. "At this time, we have been unable to verify who was piloting the airplane," Graham stated. "Three of the occupants did possess pilots’ licenses but we have been unable to verify (who was piloting) as of this time. That is one of the things we are working on."

The Cessna 550 model is certified for single-pilot operation, but can also be flown by two pilots. Graham acknowledged that many pilots utilize the Cessna 550 for solo flights, but the specifics of Thursday’s flight regarding pilot complement remain under investigation.

Evidence suggests that the initial impact with the ground occurred just short of the runway before the aircraft continued onto the runway itself. "Yes, it did hit the ground before getting to the runway," Graham confirmed in response to a direct question. When pressed about the proximity to a fence, Graham indicated, "Right in that vicinity is where the witness marks are. We’re still evaluating that."

To aid in their fact-finding, the NTSB is actively soliciting information from the public. They have issued a public appeal for anyone who may have captured video or photographs of the incident, or who may have witnessed the crash, to come forward and contact the NTSB witness email account at [email protected].

Graham indicated that preliminary information suggests the aircraft may have been reapproaching the runway at a low altitude. However, he emphasized the need for further interviews and the examination of photographic and video evidence before drawing any conclusions. "At this point, we are doing some interviews on site. We’re looking for additional witnesses and that’s why I put that out in the briefing. But we don’t have anything to share. It’s much too early for that. That would go into our analysis section."

At this early stage of the investigation, the NTSB has not identified any specific mechanical issues with the aircraft that may have contributed to the crash. Similarly, speculation regarding the potential role of weather conditions is being reserved pending further analysis.

"The weather was visual flight rules but there were low ceilings out there and there was heavy drizzle at the time," Graham explained, outlining the environmental factors under scrutiny. "So, that is one of the three things we mainly look at — the people operating the aircraft, we look at the aircraft itself and we look at the environment and the weather is one of the things we do and will look at."

The NTSB’s investigation will systematically examine all contributing factors, including pilot performance, aircraft systems and maintenance, and environmental conditions. The process is designed to determine the probable cause of the accident and to issue safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences.

Greg Biffle, a prominent figure in NASCAR, retired from full-time competition in the Cup Series after the 2016 season. During his career, he achieved significant success, including winning the 2000 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship and the 2002 NASCAR Busch Series (now Xfinity Series) championship. He is also a former winner of the Daytona 500 qualifying race and a consistent contender in the Cup Series, amassing 19 wins, 91 top-five finishes, and 187 top-10 finishes in 361 Cup Series starts. His career was marked by his association with Roush Fenway Racing for the majority of his Cup Series tenure. The tragic loss of Biffle and his family has sent ripples of grief throughout the motorsports community, which is now awaiting the detailed findings of the NTSB’s thorough investigation.
